Ars Electronica 2017 - Artificial intelligence /// September 7-11, 2017, Linz /// #mediaart #artsci | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Artificial intelligence has done it again. Now that Facebook, Uber and Co. are suffering from an increasingly bad public image, the reinvention of Virtual Reality has already lost its allure, and the Internet of Things doesn’t seem to be able to get beyond the self-replenishing refrigerator, the thrill engendered by futuristic super-machines is dominating the headlines.

So what are we to make of artificial intelligence? Gigantic job eliminator? Or the next step in evolution, the one in which technology finally asserts its mastery over us? Or maybe the source of redemptive systems that develop new medications for us and operate on us, that invest and multiply our capital, and that even make better business executives because the boss is finally a more rational decision-maker? Artificial intelligence has many faces and they’re sure to pay attention to us all.

The 2016 IK Prize, in partnership with Microsoft, challenged digital creatives to use a form of artificial intelligence to allow the public to explore, investigate or ‘understand’ British art in the Tate collection in new ways. An expert panel of judges selected a shortlisted four ideas in response to a brief on artificial intelligence.

They included a proposal to give artworks the power to daydream, an intelligent machine comparing artworks with the never-ending stream of images from across the internet, an A.I. artist-in-residence learning to create art, and an experiment to see if a machine can learn to describe artworks as well as humans.

… and what comes after self-driving cars and the internet of things?

While the world still has its hands full dealing with the Digital Revolution and the cultural and social transformations and challenges that it’s brought about, a young generation of scientists and creative engineers has set a course for new frontiers and is already at work amalgamating the disembodied world of digital data with the physical world of our bodies.
They’re interconnecting bits and atoms in elementary form, fabricating new high-tech materials from natural substances. They’re teaming up with artists and designers, employing the neurosciences and biotechnology, digital hardware & software, and bringing together old handicrafts traditions with 3-D printers and laser cutters.

With their unorthodox approaches and highly inspiring projects, they’re not only blazing trails for new developments; they’re also opening up completely new ways of looking at the role of science in our society and the interplay of technology and nature...

Michael Candy / Big Dipper / Lauréat Prix Cube 2016 /// #mediaart

Surveillance II is a piece composed of an arabidopsis plant and a digital screen. On the space station, normal arabidopsis plants used to be exposed under different environmental conditions for scientific examination. In Surveillance II, an arabidopsis plant is positioned in a “space capsule”, the micro-environment data (wind, light, air pressure) is synced with that of the location where the news takes place. Meanwhile, as a response to these “news radiation”, the oxygen released by the plant is also tracked and displayed in real-time.

This symbiotic system re-imagines the management of sewage in order to salvage its potential as a source of energy. It is made up of a set of modular microbial fuel cells for the development of colonies of bacteria whose metabolism produces electricity and improves water quality. The modules create a hydraulic network that feeds bio-filtered water into the central container, creating an optimal environment where producer species and consumer species from different trophic levels (protozoa, crustaceans, micro algae, and aquatic plants) can achieve homeostatic equilibrium. The electricity produced by the bacteria is released as bursts of luminous energy, enabling photosynthesis by the plants living in the central container, which thereby complete their metabolic processes. When the organic material present in the microbial cells has been entirely consumed, an electronic monitoring network is responsible for pumping the byproducts generated by the species in the nuclear ecosystem out into the modular cells, restoring the cycle...

Joi Ito interviewed by Juliet Bartz. About MIT media lab’s Disobedience Award

Joi Ito interviewed by Juliet Bartz. About MIT media lab’s Disobedience Award | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In the 1980s, Joi Ito traded in library tables at the University of Chicago for turntables at Chicago’s Smart Bar. But his attempt to evade academia wouldn’t stick.

The two-time college dropout became director of the MIT Media Lab in 2011, making the 50-year-old an academic administrator at one of the most renowned universities in the world. Before that, he was an entrepreneur who started a number of his own companies and invested in the likes of Flickr, Twitter and Kickstarter

A proud supporter of “responsible disobedience” — the lab is awarding its first $250,000 Disobedience Award this July — Ito is in Chicago Wednesday as a Chicago Ideas speaker. He will appear with IDEO Chicago Executive Portfolio Director Neil Stevenson at an event to discuss Chicago’s role in “embracing culture, art and experimentation.”

Blue Sky talked to Ito — whose interdisciplinary media lab focuses on the creative use of digital technology, sciences, arts and design — about the disobedience mindset....
