“In that Empire, the Art of Cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Unconscionable Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds struck a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided point for point with it. The following Generations, who were not so fond of the Study of Cartography as their Forebears had been, saw that that vast map was Useless, and not without some Pitilessness was it, that they delivered it up to the Inclemencies of Sun and Winters. In the Deserts of the West, still today, there are Tattered Ruins of that Map, inhabited by Animals and Beggars; in all the Land there is no other Relic of the Disciplines of Geography.” - Jorge Luis Borges, “On Exactitude in Science”

"(in)exactitude in science" is an online exhibition curated by Kamilia Kard and Filippo Lorenzin about the relationship of dependency between the (non-digital) element and its (digital) rendering which becomes independent and that at some point takes even its place. We are in a post-indexing era: the Web is the 1:1 scale representation of the real world, it exceeded that level of detail becoming a structure aside, now that is not influenced by the real data which in turn influences it.

#Call - 20 DAY STRANGER - the new app of the MIT Media Lab Playful Systems

#Call - 20 DAY STRANGER - the new app of the MIT Media Lab Playful Systems | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

We design systems that become experiences by transcending mere utility and usability.

In a world mediated through computing, our everyday lives are increasingly affected by complex and invisible systems. Some of these are algorithmic trades on the stock market, others are search results for information, movies, or a date. These systems often aspire to transparency, usability, and efficiency. Playful systems take a different approach, bringing the systems to the foreground as games, stories, narratives, and visualizations. Playful systems embrace complexity rather than conceal it, and seek to delight, not disappear.

Conductor: www.mta.me, an online interactive string instrument - by Alexander Chen

At www.mta.me, Conductor turns the New York subway system into an interactive string instrument. Using the MTA's actual subway schedule, the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignelli's 1972 diagram. (More info at this blog post.)

In its first week of launch, mta.me was picked up by The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Engadget, Gizmodo, Mashable, Creativity, Fast Company, Gawker, Wired, and more.

Composition with JavaScript by Kostya Loginov, Vlad Yakovlev | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Composition with Javascript is an interactive work made using HTML, CSS, Javascript and jQuery, based on Piet Mondrian's “Composition with Yellow, Red, Black, Blue and Grey” (1920). It allows everybody deconstruct the original painting and form it again in whatever he or she wants. Lines are shiftable (just drag it with your mouse) and colours changeable (click on it). Texture of the painting was preserved for authentic look. One can play with composition, forms and colours, alter the harmony of the piece or even destroy it and compose something pictorial (see examples).
