Antarctica: Trip of a Lifetime | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
Joanna Symons tells you all you need to know about visiting Antarctica, the glassy world of the last wilderness.
Alison Rostetter's insight:
Scooped - because it's my dream destination although I'll probably never be able to afford it and perhaps because for the sake of the planet, I shouldn't go there.  Still, it would be amazing!

Alison Rostetter's insight:

I love this 50% conversation.  Obviously, one would need to explain a little about the dynamics of the Cold War and the West and East holding each other to ransom with their atomic weapons.  Fortunately, this scenario never came to pass, but I wonder how many near misses there were??

The Confounding, Enigmatic 'Ode To Billie Joe'

The Confounding, Enigmatic 'Ode To Billie Joe' | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
Tuesday is June 3, a date memorialized in a 1967 hit by singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry. Even with a suicide in the first verse, the song helped Gentry bump the Beatles off the top of the charts.

Alison Rostetter's insight:

I have always loved this song but the absolute meaning has always escaped me.

Alison Rostetter's insight:

I 'ordered' this video from videoclass.com because I was intrigued as to what other teachers do with that old beastie, the  Present Perfect.  This is the video I got.  It's OK, ....  but for me (and my classes - young adults) it just doesn't go far enough and it doesn't really explain that Present + Perfect are a melt-together of the Past and the Present.  However, it was free and... well, I leave other teachers to judge.

Monty Python - Life of Brian - The Haggle

Funniest movie ever made
Alison Rostetter's insight:

I used this video with a Business English class.  It's 'Brian', who is being chased by Roman soldiers, trying to buy a beard as a quick disguise.  The stall owner, however, wants Brian to haggle, or bargain, for the beard.  Brian is in a great hurry and doesn't have time to haggle.

After we watched the video a couple of times, the students tried to sell one of their own, personal possessions and haggled with a partner to find a good price.  I used this in conjunction with the BEC speaking Part 3 in either Vantage or Higher.  The aim is to negotiate a sale by reaching a suitable compromise.  I also gave some expressions on the board for them to use:  you must be joking / I can't accept that / the price is too high / what about if I give you $$$$ and you give me the (object) plus.... a second part of a deal.  It was a lot of fun!
