FBI hopes grainy video will help solve 25-year-old $500 million art heist

FBI hopes grainy video will help solve 25-year-old $500 million art heist | Artflopolis | Scoop.it
Federal investigators in Boston on Thursday released 25-year-old surveillance video showing a security guard admitting a man to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum the night before it was robbed of $500 million worth of art in the largest such heist in U.S. history. The six-minute, 40-second video shows a white man, wearing glasses and apparently in his 50s or 60s, being let in by the guard through a rear entrance to the museum shortly after …
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

The statute of limitations has run out on the art heist, but the mystery still confounds.  13 empty frames hang forlornly as per Isabella Gardiner's will that clearly prevents the museum from ever changing anything.   Her will stipulated that the paintings must remain exactly as she had decreed or the entire collection would be sold and the money donated to Harvard.

'The Art of Forgery' steals hearts of audience | Dailycal.org

'The Art of Forgery' steals hearts of audience | Dailycal.org | Artflopolis | Scoop.it
What is it, exactly, that qualifies a piece of art as a masterpiece? Some hold that the artist must create something previously unknown, while others base the work off of credible technique or the emotion behind the piece. But if an artist can recreate the same merit and the sameRead More…
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

"Although [one of the forgeries] was [a collector's] favorite piece, when she realized it was a forgery, she no longer considered it a work of art but rather “a decorative object.” It is the same painting, stylistically — but it does not originate from the inventor of the style. Therefore, [she] no longer considers it a masterpiece."   And the rest of us no longer consider her opinion worth lining the inside of a birdcage with...

In pictures: Germany begins publishing list of works found in Nazi art stash - Telegraph | Artflopolis | Scoop.it
Art experts in Germany have identified a previously-unknown painting by Marc Chagall as being among the 1,400 works found in the flat of elderly recluse Cornelius Gurlitt.
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

If any long lost heirs or family are missing their Matisses, Picassos, Chagalls, or other entarte Kunst (Degenerate Art),  you may want to check with Gurlitt who has revealed a second trove of art confiscated from Jews by the Nazis.  Now is probably a good time to make a claim.  Slides of about 25 pieces of art here.  Many of the artists are easily recognized while the work itself is not.

These pieces of art have a story to tell!

Does the Munich hoard turn the story of art and the Nazis on its head? | Artflopolis | Scoop.it
The discovery in a Munich flat of 1,500 'lost' works raises fresh questions about the Nazis' attitude to the modern art they loved to hate, says Jonathan Jones
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

The article poses the question of whether there exists "some larger network of Nazi art hoarders sitting on secret treasures all this time in postwar Europe, living off occasional covert sales of the Picassos that they keep among the canned foods in their anonymous flats?"
