Instant Opinion Polls in the Classroom

Instant Opinion Polls in the Classroom | Art meets Technology | Scoop.it

For a long time now I have been looking for a tool that enables instant polling in the classroom or in the lecture room. I specifically wanted something that; doesn't require registration (especially from the people I'm polling), updates very quickly, works on any platform from computers to mobile devices

It looks like I have finally found what I've been looking for and best of all it's free. The tool that I have found is Mentimeter and it does all of the above.

Digital storytelling: How to tell a story that stands out in the digital age?

Digital storytelling: How to tell a story that stands out in the digital age? | Art meets Technology | Scoop.it

"So, how do you tell a story in the digital age that stands out, captures people’s attention and gets them to act, engage with your institution? My favourite story for quite some time now and one I’ve been showing in workshops around the world is the story of the Troy public library."

Ok -- the author here isn't writing anything revolutionary. So you can skim the text. But watch the 2.5 minute video! It's the reason I selected this piece.

The video is brilliant -- and a perfect example of how story triggers can make a difference in social causes and social cause marketing.

The video is about a library. It is controversial. Now I am a big fan of libraries so I was rooting for it (my personal bias). And the video itself is a really good example of a digital story.

I say 'story triggers' because the library used story elements and metaphors that sparked stories within the viewer's/reader's brains. The library did not actually tell a full-blown story yet the public reaction was immediate and powerful.

Go watch the video! Then share what you think.

The Makings of Maker Spaces, Part 1: Space for Creation, Not Just Consumption - The Digital Shift

The Makings of Maker Spaces, Part 1: Space for Creation, Not Just Consumption - The Digital Shift | Art meets Technology | Scoop.it

"Maker spaces in libraries are the latest step in the evolving debate over what public libraries’ core mission is or should be. From collecting in an era of scarce resources to curation in an era of overabundant ones, some libraries are moving to incorporate cocreation: providing the tools to help patrons produce their own works of art or information and sometimes also collecting the results to share with other members of the community.

Maker spaces promote learning through play; have the potential to demystify science, math, technology, and engineering; and encourage women and underrepresented minorities to seek careers in those fields.

They also tie in to the growing trend of indie artists in every medium—including books—who are bypassing traditional gatekeepers, taking advantage of new tools to produce professionally polished products, and going direct to the web to seek an audience.

Maker spaces also acknowledge green concerns by reconnecting consumers to the labor involved in producing what they use. While 3-D printers are perhaps the signature offering of Maker spaces, libraries find that low-tech and low-cost opportunities are just as popular."

Interesting: A Super Obscure Patent Now Blocks 3D Printing Of Weapons, Food, Prosthetics, Even Human Skin | Art meets Technology | Scoop.it
Say goodbye to that Star Trek food replicator.

The future of 3D printing was bright, until an obscure patent filed in 2007 passed just the other day.
Essentially, the patent is anticipatory of future technology, assuming that a 3D printer will one day become a household item, and that materials for that printer will be equally as common.

Just how far beyond the images could you go?
