This video shows us the composition, the fabrication and physical properties of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are a brand new material which have very special properties. Ray Baughman from the institute shows us a type of carbon nanotubes. He said that it's like diamond molecules, so it's very strong. It's stronger than steel and it's electricity conductive. Carbon atomes are arranged in a tub structure. They can have spectacular mechanical properties. 

To make it, all you need is carbon gaz and a big and very warm oven. The gaz passes throught it and forms a little black part of carbon nanotube which is 2 cm large and 2 cm long, made of 200 bilion of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are  very thin and very high tubes.

The speaker discovers experiences with university's profesionnals. They show a piece of material made with carbon nanotubes which is in reality a nanotube forest. In a very little area, there are 100 billions of carbon nanotubes. They have special connectivity between all of them so if one  goes higher, the rest comes with it . It will be used for shoes, cars .... Scientists don't know yet if it's toxic or not.

The university of Surrey takes part of an international project : the "Multifunctional Carbon Nanotubes for Biomedical  Applications". The uses of nanotubes in medicin is hampering because of the poor interaction between the biological system and those nanotubes. The goal of the project is to find a solution to make them biocompatible. The scientists of this university wrap the nanotubes into DNA and RNA. The aim is to combine them with  additional molecules and laser treatment to kill cancer cells. In spite of this advance we won't use carbon nanotubes to treat cancer before a long time.

This article explains that scientists found a way to make carbon nanotubes harmless for human body. Because at the beginning carbon nanotubes causes dieases, it impairs lung and leeds to cancers. But an enzyme (MPO) present in white blood cells in the human body can break down nanotube of carbon and convert them into water and carbon dioxyde. This enzyme normally neutralises harmful bacteria but now thanks to it, carbon nanotubes can be used in medicin to introduce  a treatment in human cells  and cure dieases. But there is still a question which is how to control when the enzym will break down the carbon nanotubes ?
