A REST API for Arduino and the CC3000 WiFi Chip

A REST API for Arduino and the CC3000 WiFi Chip | Arduino, Netduino, Rasperry Pi! | Scoop.it

I was recently playing with the Arduino Yún for a whole set of new projects, and I discovered a sketch that implements a REST API for the Arduino Yún. We’ll see in more details what a REST API is, but for now let’s say it allows to standardise the communication between your Arduino and the external world via WiFi or Ethernet, and develop complex applications without having to modify your Arduino sketch every time.

Arduino Yún: Connecting a JeeNode to the Internet | Modern Device

Arduino Yún: Connecting a JeeNode to the Internet | Modern Device | Arduino, Netduino, Rasperry Pi! | Scoop.it

For my first Yún project, I wanted to focus on the Atheros processor because the Atmel processor is identical to that of the Arduino Leonardo and functions essentially the same. But what to do? As it turns out, we have a hot box that we use to keep the radios dry for our JeeLabs products, and when it was first set up we added a humidity sensorconnected to a JeeNode USB that output humidity and temperature data to a LCD screen via an LCD plug (for the sake of product placement, I might as well mention that a Jee ProtoBoard was involved as well). The thing is, every now and then the darn thing would freeze and need to be reset, and with everything that goes on here no one really has time to check on the hot box with any kind of regularity. Clearly we needed a way to be able to check the status of the hot box from anywhere. That’s where the Arduino Yún would come in.

» LowPower JeeLabs

» LowPower JeeLabs | Arduino, Netduino, Rasperry Pi! | Scoop.it

And it’s not even close to empty: this is a JeeNode USB with a 1300 mAh LiPo battery tied to its back, and (as I just measured) it’s still running at 3.74 V, go figure.

Let’s do the math on what’s going on here:

  • the battery is specified as 1300 mAh, i.e. 1300 mA for one hour and then it’s empty
  • in this case, it has been running for some 1096 x 24 = 26,304 hours total
  • so the average current consumption must have been under 1300 / 26304 = 50 µA
  • well… in that case, the battery should be empty by now, but it isn’t
  • in fact, I suspect that the average power consumption is more like 10..25 µA

Two things to note: 1) LiPo batteries pack a lot of energy, and 2) they have a really low self-discharge rate, so they are able to store that energy for a long time.
