Durst defense uses Post headlines during murder case

Durst defense uses Post headlines during murder case | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
LOS ANGELES — The Post was front and center at a pretrial hearing in the Robert Durst murder case Tuesday, as the ex-NYPD detective who investigated the disappearance of the real estate tycoon’s wife was quizzed on tabloid headlines. “It’s bulls–t. I couldn’t think of a better synonym,” snarled Mike Struk as a defense attorney held up a September article reading: “Lawsuit claims NYPD covered up Durst’s role in wife’s death.” The lawsuit in question accused Struk and the NYPD of colluding to hide the role Durst — who was infamously caught confessing how he “killed them all” in HBO documentary “The Jinx” — played in wife Kathleen’s 1982 disappearance. Struk approved of the next Post headline

Charges: Athlete killed wife in condo, crawled outside, made up "attack" story

Charges: Athlete killed wife in condo, crawled outside, made up "attack" story | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
A former professional football player slashed his wife's neck and then crawled on the ground outside their rented Utah condominium before concocting a story about an attack by assailants, prosecutors said in murder charges filed Monday. The bloody scene in the ski town of Park City indicated that Keri "KC" McClanahan, 28, put up a desperate struggle before she was killed. Police found her husband, Anthony D. McClanahan, 46, covered in blood and crawling on his stomach outside the condominium complex where the couple had rented a unit early in the morning of Nov. 2. A resident of the complex had called 911 to report they'd seen him crawling low to the ground through the hallways and calling for help, and a police sergeant who happened to be driving by on patrol spotted McClanahan outside about three minutes later, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

Retired NYPD detective from Robert Durst's past testifies in the millionaire's murder case

Retired NYPD detective from Robert Durst's past testifies in the millionaire's murder case | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
A retired New York police detective took the stand in the Robert Durst murder case Tuesday, testifying that he did all he could to solve the mystery of the long-ago disappearance of the real estate tycoon’s wife. The 74-year-old millionaire is accused of shooting his best friend, Susan Berman, in her Benedict Canyon home in 2000. The murder, prosecutors allege, was motivated by fear she’d tell others what she knew about the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s first wife, Kathleen. New York police Det. Michael Struk, who led the investigation into Kathleen Durst’s still unsolved disappearance, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom and vehemently denied accusations that New York authorities sought to protect

An LAPD officer accidentally filmed himself putting cocaine in a suspect’s wallet | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
Police officers can’t seem to stop filming themselves potentially planting evidence. The latest incident comes from Los Angeles, where an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) accidentally filmed himself placing cocaine in a suspect’s wallet, according to a new report by CBS Los Angeles. The body camera video shows police picking up Ronald Shields, who was charged with felony hit-and-run, having a gun in the trunk of his car, and cocaine possession in April. The police report claimed cops had found the cocaine in Shields’s left pocket. The footage tells a different story. LAPD officer Gaxiola, as CBS Los Angeles identified him, picks up Shields’s wallet from the street and shows

‘I wanna hear screaming’: Human trafficking, torture case opens with unnerving phone call

‘I wanna hear screaming’: Human trafficking, torture case opens with unnerving phone call | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
MARTINEZ — At the start of his opening statement Monday, prosecutor Chad Mahalich didn’t have to say a word. He stared sternly at the jury for a few seconds, then simply pressed play on his laptop computer, allowing the voice of human trafficking and murder defendant Deandre Lewis to fill the courtroom. “Where’s my mother (expletive) money?” Lewis could be heard demanding from his jail cell, during a 2013 recorded call. He directed the person on the other line, his co-defendant Rachel Smith, to “put the (expletive) on the phone right now.” Lewis then demanded money, and brushed off the woman’s excuse that it was in her bank account the last time she checked it and that she didn’t know what happened.
