Seth Dixon's curator insight, May 22, 2013 2:23 PM

I have recently read the book the Wizard of Oz with my children and the book fits this hypothesis much more accurately than the movie does.  The Emerald City wasn't truly that color but everyone was force to wear emerald-colored glass (hence, they all believed that the ordinary things had extraordinary monetary value).

Ms. Harrington's curator insight, May 22, 2013 2:28 PM

Henry Littlefield's "Parable on Populism" covers this hypothesis in great detail and is worth the read.

'Tis the season: White House Christmas ornaments

In the 1980s first lady Nancy Reagan launched the idea of selling White House Christmas ornaments. But then the White House Historical Association started honoring each president, sequentially, beginning with a dove copied from the weather vane at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Rita Braver examines the history of this White House tradition, and checks out this year's ornament, honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Paper Scraps Recovered From Blackbeard's Cannon Reveal What Pirates Were Reading

Paper Scraps Recovered From Blackbeard's Cannon Reveal What Pirates Were Reading | U.S HISTORY SHACK : MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it
Old-timey pirates are typically portrayed as stupid, unrefined thugs whose only interests involved plundering captured ships and forcing enemies to walk the plank. The recent discovery of legible text on paper pulled from the cannon of Blackbeard’s flagship paints a strikingly different picture of these misunderstood sailors.

China set for groundbreaking 2018 mission to the far side of the moon

China set for groundbreaking 2018 mission to the far side of the moon | U.S HISTORY SHACK : MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it
The two part Chang'e 4 space mission will launch in June when a satellite is placed when a 60,000km behind the moon, followed later in the year by a lander and rover.

According to the Chongqing Morning Post, a container filled with seeds and insect eggs will be attached to Chang'e 4, China's second lunar lander, and will be sent to the Moon in 2018.  The container, which is made from special aluminum alloy, will demonstrate the growing process of plants and animals on the Moon.

It will also provide valuable data and experience for the future establishment of eco-bases on other planets. 'The container will send potatoes, Arabidopsis seeds and silkworm eggs to the surface of the Moon. The eggs will hatch into silkworms, which can produce carbon dioxide, while the potatoes and seeds emit oxygen through photosynthesis. Together, they can establish a simple ecosystem on the Moon,' Zhang Yuanxun, chief designer of the container, explains.
