Antibiotic resistant bacteria in seafood | Aquaculture Directory

Antibiotic resistant bacteria in seafood | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Shrimp and fish caught from the Vizag coast contain bacteria which may be harmful to human health, if found in excess. Microbiological tests conducted on flower tail shrimp and one kind of tuna fish confirmed the presence of coliforms like E Coli.

The tests also revealed that the E Coli found in the seafood has 100 percent resistance to various antibiotics. The resistance indicates that antibiotics will not be effective to kill the bacteria.

Researchers from the Department of Marine Living Resources of Andhra University said that wider and monoculture tests will be conducted on this seafood to find out the level of presence of E Coli and other bacteria.

Sea bass shortage could bring complete fishing ban in 2017 | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Sea bass could be off the menu in British restaurants after experts warned that there was a desperate shortage of stocks in UK and European waters.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) confirmed that the wild bass population has slipped to dangerously low levels and have recommended a complete fishing ban in 2017.

The European Union imposed a ban in February and March of this year to allow fish to spawn, but it has not prevented continued declines.

The Global Demand for Protein will require a Sustainable Shift to the Sea | Aquaculture Directory

The Global Demand for Protein will require a Sustainable Shift to the Sea | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
By 2050, global demand for protein on our dinner plates is expected to increase by 80 percent over current levels, due to population growth in African countries and increased wealth in Asia.

How are we going to meet this demand? In 2011, 69 percent of the animal protein consumed globally came from land-based sources — and there are fewer and fewer options for expanding production on land.

“Most of the land we think of as farmland is used to grow food for animals, not for people,” says Arlin Wasserman, keynote speaker at the 2015 SeaWeb Seafood Summit and founder of Changing Tastes, a consultancy focused on food sustainability planning.

Could Brexit impact Alaska’s fishing industry? | Aquaculture Directory

Could Brexit impact Alaska’s fishing industry? | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The United Kingdom's recent vote to exit the European Union — dubbed Brexit — has turned seafood trading on its head.

For 43 years the U.K. has been a major part of the 28-country EU, and what the pullout will mean for longstanding business arrangements is anyone's guess. Last year the U.K. imported more than $90 million of Alaska seafood.

"It's still speculative, but anything that has a negative effect on currency values relative to the dollar hurts exports. I do expect we will continue to be strong trading partners with both the U.K. and the EU — I guess separately now," said Tyson Fick, communications director for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.
