Washington state conservation group is suing the Canadian owners of a large industrial salmon farm that failed over the summer 

Wild Fish Conservancy says the company negligently allowed the salmon escape to happen, which would be a Clean Water Act violation. More than 100,000 non-native Atlantic salmon escaped into Puget Sound when Cooke Aquaculture’s pens near Cypress Island collapsed.

The Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in late November that Jeff Fort has agreed to take on the role of chief operating officer, effectively immediately, in addition to his existing role as chief financial officer, a position he has held with the organization since 2012. 

Fort has been involved with GAA since its inception in 1997. His company, Delta Blue Aquaculture, is a GAA Founding Member. Fort is currently a member of the GAA board of directors and GAA executive committee.

Millions of tonnes of fish are thrown back into the sea from fishing vessels globally each year because they are not commercially viable or are banned from being caught under EU rules. This unsustainable practice wastes fish, potentially harming fish stocks.

Good fish health and low mortality are important in our farming. The annual mortality in Cermaq’s global operations spans from 4 % to 6%. Although the relevance can be discussed, for comparison 6 % is the same level as the annual mortality in Norwegian lamb production*. 

Fish survival for Atlantic salmon, measured as a rolling 12 months’ rate, has improved over the past year in all regions.

“Most people here presume they are dead and gone,” said Tony Meyer, spokesman for the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, representing the treaty tribes of western Washington.

The Group's Operational EBIT for the period came to NOK 801.3 million, up from NOK 576.3 million in the third quarter last year.

Maine is allowing scallop fishermen to catch the same amount of scallops in the coming season as they did in the previous one. 

The Maine Department of Marine Resources says its advisory council has approved the specifications for the 2017-18 scallop fishing season. Last year, fishermen were allowed to harvested 15 gallons of scallops per day in the Cobscook Bay area and 10 gallons per day in the rest of the state.
