Participants at the Global Workshop on Nutrition-sensitive Fish Agri-food Systems which closed 8 December in Siem Reap, Cambodia agreed that while evidence is mounting that fish is a solid investment choice, in particular for reducing global undernutrition, more needs to be done to build the case.   

The workshop also saw an announcement that WorldFish has become an official member of the Scaling UP Nutrition (SUN) movement. SUN is a global push for action to improve nutrition of all —especially women and children.

The Nordic country seeks to reduce transmission from farmed fish to those found in the wild, as well as to limit the accumulation of drug-resistant salmon lice. On Wednesday, 

March 8 of this year, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Fisheries of Norway issued a statement announcing the establishment of a new system to control sea lice in salmon farming centers, mainly during the critical season of spring (boreal) of six weeks.

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) Fish Wealth Department signed an agreement with Al Qamra Holding Group to establish a fish farming project involving floating cages in the sea.  

The agreement was signed by the Assistant Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs, Livestock and Fisheries at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser al-Thani, and Chairman of Al Qamra Holding, Hamad al-Qamra, and a number of stakeholders.

The European Parliament and the Council of the EU have reached a political agreement on the European Commission proposal establishing a multi-annual plan for demersal stocks in the North Sea, the second of its kind. 

Europêche welcomes the final adoption of this legislative proposal which, in the context of regionalisation, will bring decision-making closer to Member States and fishermen through the adoption of joint recommendations.

Halse has been with Cooke since 2004, joining the company after serving five years with the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association. As vice-president communications, she was a spokesperson for Cooke Aquaculture and its various seafood divisions.

In 2018 Seafish will be running Trawl Gear Technology and Selectivity Training courses for fishermen from Scotland at the Sintef Flume Tank in Hirtshals, Denmark. The courses are part of a Seafish project supported by EMFF funding. 

These courses will take the form of two days of intensive trawl gear work in the flume tank. Part of the time will be spent going through a standard gear syllabus that is relevant to all trawling and covers the basics of trawl gear and selective devices.

If we have to feed 9.8 billion people by 2050, food from the ocean will have to play a major role. Ending hunger and malnutrition while meeting the demand for more meat and fish as the world grows richer will require 60% more food by the middle of the century. 

But around 90% of the world’s fish stocks are already seriously depleted. Pollution and increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere, which is making the oceans warmer and more acidic, are also a significant threat to marine life.

Washington state regulators have fined Cooke Aquaculture $8,000 for water quality violations at its farmed salmon operations off Bainbridge Island. 

The violations are unrelated to the company's Cypress Island net pens, which collapsed in August and released tens of thousands of non-native Atlantic salmon into Puget Sound. The state is currently investigating that collapse.

Federal marine regulators are making $450,000 available to try to foster more seafood farming on the East Coast.   

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says it's providing $450,000 to expand aquaculture operations and production off the eastern states. The agency says it wants to offset the U.S.'s $14 billion seafood trade deficit.

The North Sea brown shrimp fishery (Crangon crangon) — operating in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands — has achieved MSC certification following a collaboration between fishermen, conservation NGOs, government bodies and scientists. 

The announcement took place on Tuesday, 12 December at the Agricultural and Fisheries Council in Brussels, Belgium and the certificate was awarded by the assessor Acoura Marine.
