The conference, organised by the Arctic Circle and the Scottish Government, explored environmental issues, transport, energy solutions and other issues in the face of a changing Arctic region.

Businesses and organisations can apply for cash to boost the local economy and create jobs within the fishing and marine sectors. 


The funding is available through the Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) as part of the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund. Projects that are eligible would be in aquaculture, maritime -based tourism and seafood sectors.

Located in Catripulli, in the commune of Curarrehue, the center was inaugurated this Tuesday 21. It will produce eyed eggs of Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Optimizing the competitiveness of the Chilean industry. Hendrix Genetics invested US$ 8.2 million. 

The rest was co-financed by the national Corporation for the Promotion of Production (Corfo). In close connection with the global aquaculture R&D team of Hendrix Genetics, the breeding program will focus on improving its salmon genetics in: health, growth and resistance to diseases and parasites with the application of the latest technology in genetics and genomics.

The report, Sustainable, Diverse and Growing – The State of Farmed Seafood in Canada 2017, shows revenues reached  $1.35 billion in 2016, and included an economic impact of $5.1 billion, jobs totalling 25,040, and Indigenous participation across the nation.

On Monday afternoon, NOAA’s Gulf of Mexico Data Management division released data on October shrimp landings in the Gulf of Mexico. 

Last month, shrimpers landed almost as much shrimp (11.6 million pounds) as was landed in October 2015 (11.7 million pounds). However, the small decrease in volume from last year’s historic low means that less shrimp was landed last month than in any prior October over the last sixteen years for which the Southern Shrimp Alliance has compiled data.

Washington state conservation group is suing the Canadian owners of a large industrial salmon farm that failed over the summer 

Wild Fish Conservancy says the company negligently allowed the salmon escape to happen, which would be a Clean Water Act violation. More than 100,000 non-native Atlantic salmon escaped into Puget Sound when Cooke Aquaculture’s pens near Cypress Island collapsed.

Fish farming in Germany and other countries in Europe like Holland, Norway, Finland, Austria, Spain and United Kingdom among others is a major activity with almost all the fish farmers concentrating mainly in Baltic Sea, North Sea and Atlantic Ocean which are a major marine resource for the countries. 

Unlike in Uganda where majority of the fish farmers catch their fish from fresh water bodies like Lake Victoria, Lake Albert, Lake Kyoga, Lake Edward and River Nile among others including aquaculture, it is not the case in Germany.

Fisheries production in the Philippines continued to decline and fell by nearly 4 percent in the third quarter due to the anemic performance of the commercial and municipal subsectors, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). 

In its report, titled “Fisheries Situation Report,” the PSA said fisheries production in the July-to-September period slid by 3.89 percent to 971,000 metric tons (MT).

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and the Center for Biological Diversity (the Center) notified the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) that its failure to ban imports of seafood from the vaquita’s habitat in Mexico violates the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

New research from WorldFish undertaken as part of the CGIAR Research Program on Fish Agri-food Systems (FISH) identifies means to lessen the use of antimicrobials, such as antibiotics, antivirals, and antiprotozoals, in aquaculture. Intensification of fish farming systems has resulted in higher risks of disease outbreaks and a subsequent trend towards more antimicrobial use the report says.
