The European Parliament and the Council of the EU have reached a political agreement on the European Commission proposal establishing a multi-annual plan for demersal stocks in the North Sea, the second of its kind. 

Europêche welcomes the final adoption of this legislative proposal which, in the context of regionalisation, will bring decision-making closer to Member States and fishermen through the adoption of joint recommendations.

Cooke Aquaculture’s long-serving Vice President Communications Nell Halse will retire at the end of 2017, the company announced Tuesday. 

Halse has been with Cooke since 2004, joining the company after serving five years with the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association. As vice-president communications, she was a spokesperson for Cooke Aquaculture and its various seafood divisions.

In 2018 Seafish will be running Trawl Gear Technology and Selectivity Training courses for fishermen from Scotland at the Sintef Flume Tank in Hirtshals, Denmark. The courses are part of a Seafish project supported by EMFF funding. 

These courses will take the form of two days of intensive trawl gear work in the flume tank. Part of the time will be spent going through a standard gear syllabus that is relevant to all trawling and covers the basics of trawl gear and selective devices.

British charity Human Rights at Sea published its latest report on the disappearances and deaths of fisheries observers and related crew in the Pacific region. The study highlights troubling trends and a lack of support at sea, as well as insufficient protections for fisheries observers undertaking their monitoring role onboard various flagged commercial fishing vessels. 

As explained, fisheries observers play a crucial role in protecting the culture, environment and economies of the 22 Pacific Island Country and Territories.

The Minister said that while he accepted that some cuts were necessary to protect the long term sustainability of stocks, some of the cuts proposed were avoidable taking account of the scientific advice.

New to the Executive Committee and serving as vice chair for SAA is Matt Bainbridge of Ethan, S.D. Set to return to the Executive Committee in the role of treasurer is George Martin of Nebo, Ky. Also, joining the Executive Committee will be Eugene Goering of Columbus, Neb., in the role of secretary.

Vietnam’s seafood export turnover is expected to reach 8.3 billion USD this year, posting an 18 percent increase over 2016, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). 

Statistics released by the association showed that in the first 11 months of the year, the country’s seafood export turnover was estimated at more than 7.6 billion USD, representing an increase of 18 percent year-on-year. In November alone, export turnover rose by 11 percent from the previous month to reach 733 million USD.

New research by Young’s Seafood shows seven in ten Brits would choose British made products when given the choice. The UK’s number one fish and seafood business polled 2,000 adults and revealed the growing trend and importance of buying British.   

The research also finds that 60 percent would crown British cuisine ‘the best in the world’, while nearly half of respondents say eating British food reminds them of their childhood. Fish and chips, roast chicken, and Shepherd’s Pie all make the top ten line-up of favourite British meals, with six in ten labelling British food as ‘traditional and comforting’.
