The commercial Dungeness crab fishery will open north of Sonoma County on Monday after several delays needed to allow the crustaceans to mature before the harvest begins. 

The northern season, which usually starts December 1, is opening two months after commercial crews started catching crab off the Sonoma Coast and areas south to Morro Bay — a region that last season accounted for about half of the more than $68 million earned by the state’s crabbing fleet.

Rafael, the "Codfather" who once dominated New Bedford's groundfish fleet, is serving four years in prison for falsifying catch records and evading taxes. He has forfeited four boats and 34 valuable fishing permits. 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has shuttered the entire quota sector where his business once operated, leaving all of his boats tied to the dock.

The UK's Young's Seafood has secured a deal in the US that will see its products sold at more than 14,000 distribution points through retailers such as Walmart, Sam's Club and Ahold Delhaize. 

Grimsby-based Young's - owned by investment groups Lion Capital, Bain Capital, and HPS Investment Partners - will see seven of its SKUs hitting US supermarket shelves. It said the move will kick-start its plans to expand internationally.

Norway exported salmon worth NOK 64.7 billion in 2017. This is an increase of 5 percent or NOK 3.4 billion compared with 2016, and it is the highest export value ever for salmon. Measured in product weight, Norway exported 1 million tonnes of salmon in 2017, which is 2.8 percent or 27,000 tonnes more than in 2016. 

- After a very strong year in 2016, we see that the export growth for salmon flattens out in 2017. The most important reason is a stable EU market.

Norway exported 40,000 tonnes of shellfish valued at NOK 1.7 billion in 2017. This is a decrease in volume of 2 percent and a reduction in value of 7 percent from 2016. 

Norway exported 9,221 tonnes of prawns worth NOK 698 million in 2017. This is a reduction in value of 5 percent and a decline in volume of 4 percent from 2016. Norway exported king crab worth NOK 509 million in 2017.

Butterfly, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm specializing in the food sector, today announced it has acquired Pacifico Aquaculture ("Pacifico"), a leader in sustainable ocean-raised aquaculture. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. 

Founded in 2010 and based in Baja California, Mexico, Pacifico is the world's first and only producer of ocean-raised striped bass. Pacifico's striped bass is prized by consumers and chefs for its premium quality, flavor and texture, and is sold through well-known distributors, food retailers and restaurants across North America.

The Brazilian aquaculture association Peixe BR criticised the temporary suspension of fish and shellfish exports to the European Union (EU) self-imposed by the Brazilian government. 

The entity which represents more than half of the Brazilian production of farmed fish argued that “without doubt, this is bad news, but it can't be said that it is unexpected or that it has been a surprise for the Brazilian authorities”.

Chief executive of Fisheries Inshore New Zealand (FINZ), Dr Jeremy Helson, says obtaining robust information pertinent to informing fisheries management decisions is vital, however it is important that issues of personal privacy, commercial sensitivity, and intellectual property are considered.

The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) has commissioned Gael Force Group to build a new state-of-the-art SeaMate feed barge for its Portree site with delivery expected later this year. 

SSC is a leading producer of Scottish salmon, employing 500 people across 60 sites on the West Coast Scotland and the Hebrides. The new contract, which represents a significant investment in the Company’s operational infrastructure, follows consent being secured for an additional 2,000 tonnes of capacity for SSC in Portree.

After more than seven years of research and testing, Cova Arias knows the vaccine she developed and patented to immunize catfish against columnaris disease works in a laboratory. She will use $321,000 in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds to answer two questions. 

“Does it work in the field, and is it cost-effective,” said Arias, a professor in Auburn University’s School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences. “The answer to both of those questions has to be yes.”

John Bullard, the regional director of NOAA’s Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, informed New England Fishery Management Council Chairman John Quinn in a letter Wednesday that his agency had approved most of their fish habitat protection plan.
