A 2015 Federal Court ruling should have brought big changes to B.C.’s salmon farming industry. 

The court found Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) was illegally allowing aquaculture companies to transfer smolts — young salmon — with viruses and diseases from hatcheries to open net salmon farms.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is in the final stages of preparation for a major renovation at its Lowestoft laboratory and headquarters, which would see its current, inefficient building demolished and replaced. 

To assist the project – which was granted full planning permission in October – Cefas applied for a £1.4m grant from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) through its capital growth programme.

Pacific Seafood, one of North America’s largest seafood companies, is the world’s first company to offer four-star Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) oysters. Four-star is the highest designation in the BAP third-party certification program. 

For “fed” species, it signifies that a product originated from a BAP-certified processing plant, was sourced from a BAP-certified farm, and has utilized seed and feed from BAP-certified hatcheries and feed mills.

Vietnam says Washington has broken WTO rules in the way it has imposed punitive tariffs on Vietnamese fish it claims are being” dumped, or sold at an unfairly cheap price, on the U.S. market.

The commercial Dungeness crab fishery will open north of Sonoma County on Monday after several delays needed to allow the crustaceans to mature before the harvest begins. 

The northern season, which usually starts December 1, is opening two months after commercial crews started catching crab off the Sonoma Coast and areas south to Morro Bay — a region that last season accounted for about half of the more than $68 million earned by the state’s crabbing fleet.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has shuttered the entire quota sector where his business once operated, leaving all of his boats tied to the dock.

The UK's Young's Seafood has secured a deal in the US that will see its products sold at more than 14,000 distribution points through retailers such as Walmart, Sam's Club and Ahold Delhaize. 

Grimsby-based Young's - owned by investment groups Lion Capital, Bain Capital, and HPS Investment Partners - will see seven of its SKUs hitting US supermarket shelves. It said the move will kick-start its plans to expand internationally.

Plans to open a controversial fish farm in a protected sea area have been dropped after unprecedented opposition due to fears for some of Scotland’s rarest marine life found living near the site. 

The huge Sound of Jura development would have contained a dozen circular cages capable of hosting around one million fish, mainly rainbow trout.

Chief executive of Fisheries Inshore New Zealand (FINZ), Dr Jeremy Helson, says obtaining robust information pertinent to informing fisheries management decisions is vital, however it is important that issues of personal privacy, commercial sensitivity, and intellectual property are considered.

The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) has commissioned Gael Force Group to build a new state-of-the-art SeaMate feed barge for its Portree site with delivery expected later this year. 

SSC is a leading producer of Scottish salmon, employing 500 people across 60 sites on the West Coast Scotland and the Hebrides. The new contract, which represents a significant investment in the Company’s operational infrastructure, follows consent being secured for an additional 2,000 tonnes of capacity for SSC in Portree.
