Bill C-68, the new Fisheries Act, tabled today by the Government of Canada, addresses one of the greatest challenges in managing Canada's oceans: the need to rebuild depleted fish populations and restore abundance for generations to come. 

The health of Canada's fish populations and the requirement to rebuild them to healthy levels has not previously been included in the Act - an absence that has left them vulnerable to decline and a lack of intervention to support their recovery.

The Morey's Seafood family is deeply saddened to announce the loss of one of its own. Morey's Chairman of the Board Justin Heyman passed away suddenly on Friday, Feb. 9, as the result of injuries sustained in a snowmobiling accident while on retreat in Wyoming. 

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Mr. Heyman was an avid cyclist, sports enthusiast and true adventurer who lived life to the fullest. He was 50 years old.

The New Zealand seafood industry has welcomed confirmation by Stuart Nash, the Fisheries Minister, that the Government is reconsidering a proposal to install cameras on all commercial fishing vessels. 

Chief Executive of Seafood New Zealand, Tim Pankhurst, said the Minister's statement that the Government will take a reasoned and pragmatic approach to ensure commercial fishers are obeying the law is welcomed.

Good fish health and low mortality are important in our salmon farming. The survival rate for our fish for the full year 2017 spanned from 94 % to 96% in our operating regions. Cermaq had no escapes in the last quarter of 2017, neither so far in 2018. 

Fish survival for Atlantic salmon, measured as a rolling 12 months rate, continues at high levels, and the same high survival rates apply for Coho and Rainbow trout raised in Chile.

Seafish is welcoming feedback on the Responsible Fishing Scheme as part of the annual review of the RFS Standard. This is an opportunity for all parties with an interest in the scheme to comment on how the standard may need to respond to changes in the external environment. 

The Responsible Fishing Scheme has been operating for two years and currently has 106 certified vessels, which collectively account for 27% of landings by UK registered vessels by weight and 19% by value. The scheme has also attracted considerable interest from outside the UK as it provides the most comprehensive third-party certification tool for social responsibility issues.

Researchers have found that by-products in Scottish salmon farming are generally well utilised, but total by-product value output could be improved by 803% (£23.7 million), based on 2015 figures, adding 5.5% value to the salmon industry. 

Led by Julien Stevens, researchers from the University of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture and University of Massachusetts at Boston have recently published research funded by IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation.

A project to improve the understanding of fisheries of South East Asia supplying raw material for fishmeal production has completed the first six months of data gathering and has made contact with government agencies and businesses. 

Jointly funded by the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and IFFO, the Marine Ingredients Organisation, the project lead Duncan Leadbitter (Fish Matter Pty) has produced a series of draft internal reports for the two funding bodies with the aim to have a public report ready by the end of the year.

The accomplishment was the focus of the Symposium on International Certifications that took place in the Minamisanriku Town Hall and provided an opportunity to celebrate the town's focus on sustainable development following the near total destruction of the area as a result of the devastating tsunami caused by the Tōhoku earthquake in March 2011.

The purchase will be made under the authority of Section 32 of the Act of August 24,1935, with the purpose to encourage the continued domestic consumption of these products by diverting them from the normal channels of trade and commerce. 

A solicitation will be issued in the near future and will be available electronically through the Web-Based Supply Chain Management (WBSCM) system. A hard copy of the solicitation will not be available.

Stevens will stay on as executive director through the transition, as Mallison joins GAA as soon as his successor at IFFO is in place, working out of the organization's Portsmouth, N.H., USA, headquarters. Stevens will continue to serve on GAA's board of directors and executive committee.
