Barclays rated worst UK bank in new ethical scorecard - Telegraph

Barclays rated worst UK bank in new ethical scorecard - Telegraph | AQA A2 BUSS4 - CSR & Ethics | Scoop.it
Barclays is the worst bank for honesty and customer service, according to an ethical scorecard.
Mr Billinghurst-Bright's insight:

Barclays is one of many banks caught up in the unethical practices of libor rate fixing which impacted the rate of interest paid on loans in their favour, mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI) and the large bonus culture with its top executives and investment banking divisions.

It is a great example of a toxic culture working in favour of many of its top workers rather than customers and shareholders. Their change of leadership from Bob Diamond to Anthony Jenkins was supposed to change this and bring a more ethical stakeholder focussed culture but more recent stories do not show any evidence of this.

Primark faces new claims that it uses sweatshop labour

Primark faces new claims that it uses sweatshop labour | AQA A2 BUSS4 - CSR & Ethics | Scoop.it
Primark was embroiled in a new row over the treatment of sweatshop workers today as shareholders gathered to celebrate record profits at the budget clothing chain.
Mr Billinghurst-Bright's insight:

TOPIC: CSR, Ethics, Porter's Generic Strategies, Strategy, Corporate Objectives, Globalisation

2006: Charity War on Want report finds child labourers in Bangladesh making Primark clothes for 3p an hour. Allegations of beating and sexual harassment are made. Primark asks for details and says it will investigate

2008: BBC's Panorama and War on Want finds Primark using child labourers working gruelling hours in slum workshops and refugee camps. Primark blames third party suppliers and says it will tighten controls on contractors

Did Primark do enough to change their ways? Did they breach their own code of conduct introduced to improve the treatment of workers amid allegations of exploitation. Do they care about CSR? Does it matter if they make record profits?

BP 'prioritised profits over safety'

BP 'prioritised profits over safety' | AQA A2 BUSS4 - CSR & Ethics | Scoop.it
On the first day of a trial in New Orleans to determine who should pay for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP is accused of having put profits before safety.
Mr Billinghurst-Bright's insight:

This event provides a clear indication that BP does not appear to view CSR as more important than profit maximisation. It appears that health & safety was less important than reducing costs for them. This disaster has had a long-term impact on the environment, wildlife and local industries and communities livelihoods e.g. fishing.

Barclays: profits down, bonuses up. Why?

Barclays: profits down, bonuses up. Why? | AQA A2 BUSS4 - CSR & Ethics | Scoop.it
Can Antony Jenkins, Barclays boss, achieve his aim of making Barclays the "go-to" bank when there is an apparent disconnection between performance rewards for staff and the financial performance of the bank?
Mr Billinghurst-Bright's insight:

Barclays: the Go-To bank for gaffes

There were 72 uses of the vacuous phrase "Go-To" in Barclays' annual report. Chief executive Antony Jenkins clearly hopes repetition of his ambition for the bank will make the term stick. Forget it. The phrase that will be remembered is "death spiral".

Jenkins used it in an interview with the Daily Telegraph to explain why Barclays paid bigger bonuses despite a 37% fall in profits from investment banking. Smaller payments, he said, would have caused too many defections: the dreaded spiral had to be avoided. Jenkins might as well have said he is powerless to resist the annual bonus-grab. Pay for performance? Go-To hell, his bankers replied.

A chief executive in Jenkins' position can roll over only once, as competitors also know. Rival investment banks on poaching missions will milk the "death spiral" line. Not a smart thing to say. (Nils Pratley, The Guardian)

In summary it appears he will find it more difficult then he thought to change the bonus culture. Or it was just PR to repair the damage to their image all along.

Nike turned their horrible reputation around with overseas labor and sweatshops. Can other companies follow their lead?
Mr Billinghurst-Bright's insight:

Nike have certainly improved but it still gets caught out from time to time due to its pursuit to minimise costs and price for retailers, maximising profit margins, the complexity of its supply chain and its continued use of manufacture in LEDCs and emerging markets such as China.
