Seminar presentation delivered to GTA Seminar, Universite de Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick.

Long long loooong presntation (almost four hours, though there's 15 minutes of set-up at the start and a 15-minute break in the middle) about the thinking behind MOOCs and the tools I've developed to build them. The first half looks first at the idea of  creating and sharing content as a matter of course. Then I look at how people learn, and talk about learning as a process of recognition. Then we go through the animation Connectivism link in today's newsletter. After the break, I take a step-by-step walk through gRSShopper, the software that runs this site and all of the MOOCs I've run, showing how the software and the theory both developed iteratively through use over a period of fifteen years or so.

As Course-Management Market Gets More Competitive, Instructure Raises $30-Million in Funds - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Instructure, a company that sells course-management software, announced on Wednesday that it had won $30-million in venture-capital funds, and some observers said the company was gaining ground on Blackboard, which has long dominated the market for learning-management systems, or LMS.

The choice of which software a college uses to manage class activity—for both online and in-person courses—has become increasingly competitive in recent years, said Casey Green, director of the Campus Computing Project, which conducts an annual survey of campus-technology leaders. He said that a few years ago Blackboard controlled about 70 percent of the market, but by 2012 it had only around 45 percent.

Community college students in Florida will soon be able to decide to skip remediation and enroll directly in credit-bearing courses, even if college advisers or placement tests say they have remedial needs. And recent high school graduates in the state won’t even need to take placement tests, because they will be deemed college-ready by holding a high school diploma.

The shifts in Florida’s remedial education policies are part of a broad bill the state’s Legislature passed and Gov. Rick Scott signed into law last month. The legislation will have major ramifications for students at Florida’s 28 two-year colleges, and perhaps beyond.

“It may foreshadow many of the things that are about to happen around the country,” said Stan Jones, president of Complete College America, an advocacy group that supported the Florida bill.
