Disability rights advocates and publishers push for national standards for ed tech materials | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Disability rights advocates and book publishers are pushing for federal regulations to ensure higher education technology is accessible to tens of thousands of students with visual impairments.

A federal study in 2011 found college students with a range of disabilities face "unintended and nearly impenetrable barriers" thrown up by some new technology products. Now, the National Federation of the Blind is floating a draft bill designed to ensure students with disabilities are not left behind on college campuses by a wave of new technologies. The proposal has the support of other disability rights groups and the Association of American Publishers.

MOOC Research

The dramatic increase in online education, particularly Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), presents researchers, academics, administrators, learners, and policy makers with a range of questions as to the effectiveness of this format of teaching and learning. To date, the impact of MOOCs has been largely disseminated through press releases and university reports. The peer-reviewed research on MOOCs has been minimal. The proliferation of MOOCs in higher education requires a concerted and urgent research agenda.

The MOOC Research Initiative (MRI) will begin to address this research gap by evaluating MOOCs and how they impact teaching, learning, and education in general.

This project is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Deep Learning for the New Teacher - On Hiring - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

What questions do you ask yourself as you begin prepping a new course? How important is the notion of deep learning to your pedagogy, and how do you facilitate it in your course design? It is now called flipped PD but such coaching has been occurring for nearly twenty eyars to my knowledge in some places. It is well worthwhile and its success is enhanced by modern systems such as YouTube, but in the end the quality of the result is dependent upon the quality of the coaching.

Congressional panel hears criticism of 'broken' accreditation system | Inside Higher Ed

Congressional panel hears criticism of 'broken' accreditation system | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON -- To hear members of Congress tell it, reauthorizing the Higher Education Act is looming on the near horizon of the legislative agenda -- even though most others here consider it a mirage that’s still years away. But when lawmakers do sit down to rewrite the law governing financial aid programs, accreditation will be under a particularly harsh spotlight.

That was clear at a hearing Thursday of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s subcommittee on higher education and workforce training, where a panel featured two representatives of accrediting agencies and two critics of traditional accreditation.

The Evolution of Classroom Technology - Edudemic

The Evolution of Classroom Technology - Edudemic | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

We’ve certainly come a long way but some things seem hauntingly similar to many years ago. For example, Thomas Edison said in 1925 that “books will soon be obsolete in schools. Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye.” I’m pretty sure this is exactly what people are saying these days about the iPad.

Interesting to listen to B.F. Skinner talk about the machine for learning. He talks about the student moving at "his" own pace. This is, no surprise, the differentiated or Mass Customized Learning precursor.

7 ways to teach digital literacy skills

7 ways to teach digital literacy skills | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"Fostering digital literacy skills is one of the most difficult tasks for educators. Evaluating and analyzing online resources for accuracy is something that many adults struggle with – we’ve all been bamboozled before, haven’t we? But digital literacy is more than just determining if something is true or false – it’s intelligently and responsibly navigating online, it’s putting countless pieces together to form a puzzle, it’s determining what’s important and evaluating bias, etc – the list goes on. So, as an educator, how do we reinforce these crucial skills in our classrooms?"
