Need to Win Scholarships?

Need to Win Scholarships? | Applying For Scholarships | Scoop.it
Common scholarship application mistakes you can avoid to make your application stand out.
Hadiya Al-Shishani's insight:

Instead of reading articles only on tips when applying for scholarships, I decided to look for some ideas of what not to do. This article covers the basic mistakes made when applying for a scholarship. The biggest mistake made is not following the word count when writing an essay. The article explains that you should aim to hit the word count exactly especially because this shows you pay attention to detail. You need to make sure that you follow every step PRECISELY because one little piece of missed/incorrect information can omit your application. And, most importantly, don’t be afraid to sell yourself! Scholarship committees give out money to the students they believe truly deserve it, so you have to make sure you show them the positive qualities and aspects of yourself.

Hadiya Al-Shishani's insight:

I have been looking for scholarships by using popular search engines and filling out my personal information. This article helped me understand that my strategy might not be the best way to find ‘the perfect scholarship’. There are many other ways to find to find scholarships than just searching online. I’ve learned to seek out scholarships wherever I go including: businesses, stores, etc. Whenever I’m not doing anything, I need to take advantage of that time and use it toward searching even more for good scholarships. Popular scholarships are not always the best idea because there are more people in the running for the money and that will decrease your chances of winning. Also, many smaller awards can easily add up to a large award in the long run. This article was really helpful because now I have a better understanding of multiple ways to find scholarships with a better chance of winning.

This article will help me find other ways to get scholarships other than the career center and the counselors website.  The article explains different ways to find scholarships like from the place your parents work or even just looking up different scholarships on a search engine.  I will use this article during the scholarship seeking process to give me insight on different routes I can take to find, fill out, and win scholarships to pay for college.

this article was actually very helpful. it never actually occurred to me to ask my family if there workplace provides scholarships, or to look around the checkout counters at places that I shop to see if they offered scholarships. knowing these things will definitely aid in my search for more obscure, less well known scholarships which will increase my chances of winning.

This article was a unique look on how to find and attain scholarships, and gave me a couple more ideas on how to both find better scholarships, and make my scholarship application sound more appealing.  One of the tips I found most surprising was that scholarship opportunities can even be found when you’re shopping.  The next time I shop at Kohl’s, I’ll be sure to look at the flyers and coupons located on the check stands in order to check for scholarship opportunities, such as their $10,000 scholarship called The Kohl’s Cares Scholarship.  The article also mentioned how to use time more efficiently.  For example, I could be using the wasted time I spend watching TV when I eat breakfast in order to find new scholarships. I can also utilize college smartphone apps that look up scholarships for students.

Hadiya Al-Shishani's insight:

I really liked this article because it gave you 10, straight-forward, to-the-point tips on how to create a successful scholarship application. The main idea is to BE ORGANIZED and TIME PRODUCTIVE. I usually have a really hard time with organization, but that is a bad habit that I must break in order to be successful when applying for scholarships. I also really enjoyed the last tip. "Make sure you're proud and satisfied with your application submission." If you don't believe in yourself, that can easily be translated from your application. Staying positive is a big part of achieving success!
