Rape of Girl, 5, Draws Focus to Child Assault in India

Rape of Girl, 5, Draws Focus to Child Assault in India | APgovernment | Scoop.it
Amid angry protests, another girl who was raped was treated in the same hospital as the 5-year-old who was tortured last week.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

This article focuses on an issue in India. A five year old girl was raped and tortured and almost died. As the young girl was treated in the hospital, it became clear to party leaders that she is not the only victim. there were many other young children in the hospital that were rape victims. in an issued report by the Asian Center of Human Rights, it was stated that there have been 48,338 cases of child rape in India reported between the years of 2001 and 2011, which in recent years have increased. As i become older and learn more about government and the world you really get to know that tragedies dont just occur in your own bubble but everywhere. This article breaks my heart to think that children out there are so helpless and harassed.

China Mourns Graduate Student Lu Lingzi After Boston Bombing

China Mourns Graduate Student Lu Lingzi After Boston Bombing | APgovernment | Scoop.it
The graduate student who was killed was one of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese who have come to the United States to be educated at its universities.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

This article really touches my heart. Obviously the event that occured in Boston was tragic for everyone whether you knew the victims or not but just to think that it took the life of a loved on abroad makes you really step back from the situation with a heavy heart. the death of Ms. Lu during the bombing was brought to attention of China through modern technology and the internet, which fascinating. the fact that if it wasnt for our technology, family and friends of the victim in China may have not known for a while but technology made it instant news. a wave of sadness ran through China due to the death of their friend, classmate, and family member. this article reminded me that the world really is connected as one and thats shared through emotions.

Washington abandons America's jobless

Washington abandons America's jobless | APgovernment | Scoop.it
David Frum says President Obama and Congress are at a stalemate over policies to speed job creation.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Wow! okay this is a rebuttle to my last post and i am so happy i found this. David Frum is talking about how although its great that the economy is picking up and there are jobs now, its only starting to turn good after efforts made since 2009. 12 million people remain unemployed. he predicts it wouldnt be until 2014 until we get as many people working as we did in 2008. this article really is shocking. it puts out the hard facts. personally i think David is being a little pesemisstic about the whole situation but he did introduce reality to Americans through this article.

Reflecting on an Asteroid's Really Close Encounter with Earth (Closer than Some Satellites)

Reflecting on an Asteroid's Really Close Encounter with Earth (Closer than Some Satellites) | APgovernment | Scoop.it
A really close encounter between a small asteroid and Earth provides a reminder that rare, but big, threats need to be seriously confronted.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Aside from all the other hectic and major issues America has to deal with, add gigantic meteors to the list. The week of February 15 showed the world that these space rocks are a force that we all need to take into consideration. A meteor was a simple 22,300 miles away from Earth! the shock wave of the meteor shocked siberia and injured 1,000 people. This event is leaving us with questions like how and who should respond? These are concerns that our government must now take into consideration.

Chris Kyle, Author of ‘American Sniper’ Reported Killed in Texas

Chris Kyle, Author of ‘American Sniper’ Reported Killed in Texas | APgovernment | Scoop.it
Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL, had taken a troubled fellow veteran to a gun range for a kind of therapy session, but the police said the man turned his gun on Mr. Kyle.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

This really is one of the more strange stories I have heard in a while. An American sniper, very skilled at his job, was shot in his home town by a friend! The sniper, Chris Kyle, was stationed in Iraq for four years and was one of the most skilled snipers in history, one who many Iraqis feared. Kyle returned home to Fort Worth Texas (Go Frogs) and wrote a book about his tales and events from war saying at the beginning it was hard to shoot people and he hesitated many times but as time went on it became second nature and he never hesitated it. One day, while home, he went to the gun range with two friends. suddenly one of the friends turned on Chris and the other friend and shot them both dead. The man tried to flea the seen but eventually was caught and charged with murder. Police still do not know the three guys relationship or the motive for killing them. creepy

Senate Approves $1.2 Trillion Debt Limit Rise

Senate Approves $1.2 Trillion Debt Limit Rise | APgovernment | Scoop.it
The $16.4 trillion debt ceiling, which drew disapproval in the House, passed the Senate on a party line vote.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

After a debate amongst the Republican party and the Democrats, Senate approved an increase in the federal debt limit. This allows President Obama to borrow 1.2 trillion dollars to operate the government. The Republicans voted against this rise in debt limit because the government spent 55% more than it collected in revenue last year, which means the last thing the government actually needs is a raise in the limit. President Obama promised that he would fix the deficit by the end of his first term which doesn't look to bright considering the deficit has become larger. The Republicans are just worried about our obsession with over spending but the Democrats seem to think it will all play out fine even though statistically it is looking a little scary.

By the numbers: Guns and mental health | APgovernment | Scoop.it
Here's a look - by the numbers - at guns and mental health.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Depressing but insightful articles explaining the reason for the killing of Sandy Hook Elementary school. When one asks why the killer did it, the common and most logical response is Lanzas mental illness which is a commong reason for many shootings in the past. The article shows many statistics on mental health and gun control. This whole situation really shakes me up, it almost makes me feel like no where is safe. I dont know what kind of policies and boundaries could be put in place to regulate gun control but I do hope there is something that can be done to stop situations like this one.

A veteran campaign worker before he can even vote | APgovernment | Scoop.it
(CNN) -- He's only 16 years old, but CNN White House correspondent Dan Lothian reports on one Michigan teen who made waives in the Obama campaign. ...
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Must watch mrs. Everett!!! My biggest pet peeve in the world is when adults undermine the intelligence and power of young adults. In todays society adults say to act like an adult, but then they do not always give us the respect we deserve because of our age! This boy is just 16 years old and played a significant role in Obamas re-election by campaigning and even training campaigners that were old enough to be his parents! seeing people my age making a difference really stands out to me.

BP Will Plead Guilty and Pay Over $4 Billion

BP Will Plead Guilty and Pay Over $4 Billion | APgovernment | Scoop.it
The British oil company said it had agreed to pay fines and accept charges related to the rig explosion two years ago that killed 11 people and caused a giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

As we all remember, two years ago BP oil company caused a huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Two years later, they are finally paying for it. the company has publicly agreed to pay $4.5 billion dollars in fines and pleaded guilty. The company as a whole also is getting charged 14 criminal charges related to the explosion of the rig and three of their employees are facing criminal charges for the related deaths of the explosion. the company is also looking at possibly paying 21 billion dollars for contamination of the water according to the Clean Water Act. I think BPs way of taking responsibility was very courageous but it isnt everyday that you see a company paying 4 billion dollars of fines and charged with 14 felonies and three seperate employee charges.

A panel of former senior American officials and outside experts asked President Obama to reconsider the likelihood that harsh sanctions will drive Tehran to concessions.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Senior American Officials are telling President Obama to reconsider his harsh sanctions on Iran, saying that they are going to backfire. Officials stated that as the pressure of the PResidents sanctions increase, repression and corruption are also increasing in Iran. Obama may be fueling the fire for a future alienation between the iran and the US. Obama rebuttles by saying that the sanctions that he has imposed support diplomacy. With No Mention of Korea, China Warns of ‘Chaos’ | APgovernment | Scoop.it
As North Korea’s ally, China has been discomfited by the behavior of the North Korean leader but has refrained from signaling any course of action.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Chinese President Xi Jinping, presented his concern about North koreas threats. He stated taht Norht Korea may be planning a missile attack toward Washington. In reaction, American government said that they will increase defense but America is putting Beijing is a position where they can either crack down on North Korea even though they are a strong ally, or they can expect larger American military presence in East Asia. This article actually frightens me to death. Although as an American, i trust my government one cannot help but to feel scared about what North Korea is planning. But I respect that leaders abroad warned us about potential threats.

January Jobs Report Reflects Hope a Recovery Is Blooming

January Jobs Report Reflects Hope a Recovery Is Blooming | APgovernment | Scoop.it
The front wheels have lifted off the runway. Now, Americans are waiting to see if the economy can truly get aloft.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

Good News, Unemployment rates dropped significantly in the month of january. Unemployment right now has actually been the lowest since early 2009! In december the unemployment rate was 8.5% (NOW 8.3%) and in August it was at a high with 9.1. Citizens may complain about many things in todays American society but you must admit, when America does it right, they do it right and deserve some credit. The rates are so low and so many Amercians now have jobs. Many critics on the other hand argue that they will not last long. They do not believe that the jobs are self sustaining and that they are only available right now because Americans are spending more now in recent times than ever. But optimists believe that the rates are decreasing and will stay that way!

Carrie Mayfield's insight:

This article is very confusing to me. I don't know if I am just tired or if i really just can't fully grasp it. It explains how Obama's fund raising for the month of January before the election was very high and even surpassed that of President Bush's fund raising which was one of the highest in history. But republican party kept raising more than the Democrats, although Obama raised a large amount he never surpassed his opponent.

Obama responds to petitions against gun violence | APgovernment | Scoop.it
(CNN) -- President Barack Obama responded personally Friday to numerous petitions against gun violence, a task normally left to other White House staff.
Carrie Mayfield's insight:

After receiving many petitions about gun control, Obama released a video stating his thoughts about gun control relating to gun owners, the constitution, and harmful gun owners. Obama appointed VP Biden to leader of the new commission regarding gun control. He says he is a strong believer in the fact that the second amendment does give the right to bear arms, but he also takes into account that many citizens believe that some citizens who are likely to be fatal should not have this right. This article was intriguing for me to read especially after the shooting of Newton, I am very interested to see if any action on gun control will finally take place.
