Extreme droughts have been covering the northern Great Plains, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic states, and Florida. Although the overall drought footprint decreased a bit, the most intense areas of the drought have grown slightly larger. It is even comparable to the "Dust Bowl" in the 1950s. This is known to be caused by warmer temperatures due to climate change.

The section titled "Food Prices and Consumers" details the effects of droughts on food prices, particularly corn.  An increase in droughts has led to a corn shortage, among other crops, which has resulted in a considerable price increase.  Beef, pork, poultry and milk will be some of the first food items to experience price increases.  Food inflation is expected to increase by approximately one percent in the next year.

Although good conditions seemed to predict a productive year for crop production, heavy droughts have reduced this dramatically. These crops consist of corn, soybeans, sorghum and hay and they have declining over the summer. Their cost has increased in response to the droughts. Marketing-year average prices for the 2012/13 range from $7.20 to $8.60.
