Descriptions and links for a better understanding on what toxins, toxicity and related topics about pollution.

Definitions:

Toxin- a chemical that adversely affects the health of a human or animal by causing injury, illness or death

Toxicity-measure of how harmful a substance is in causing injury, illness, or death to a living organism

dose-response curve- the responses of a group of test animals to various dosages of a toxic agent

LD50- Amount of a toxic material per unit of body weight of test animals that kills half the test population in a certain time

Poison- a chemical that adversely affects the health of a human or animal by causing injury, illness or death

Threshold- The point that must be exceeded to begin producing a given effect or result or to elicit a response

acute effect- Acute health effects are characterized by sudden and severe exposure and rapid absorption of the substance. Normally, a single large exposure is involved. Acute health effects are often reversible

chronic effect- Chronic health effects are characterized by prolonged or repeated exposures over many days, months or years. Symptoms may not be immediately apparent. Chronic health effects are often irreversible.

Infection- The growth of a parasitic organism within the body

Disease- a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors

Pathogen- organism that produces disease

Vector- any agent that acts as a carrier or transporter, as a virus or plasmid that conveys a genetically engineered DNA segment into a host cell

risk assessment- the scientific process of estimating how much harm a particular hazard can cause to human health or the environment

risk management- deciding whether or how to reduce a particular risk to a certain level and at what cost.

Risk- the possibility of suffering harm from a hazard that can cause injury, disease, death, economic loss, or environmental damage
