Lauren Sellers's curator insight, May 27, 2014 12:44 PM

Its crazy how big Africa really is, many of us do not realize it because it is fragmented into so many little countries and large expanses of inhospitable land. It fits multiple large countries within its borders!

Caitlyn Christiansen's curator insight, September 30, 2014 6:13 PM

On most map projections, Africa is short sized when it really is a large continent. The Mercator projection is the most common one you'll see, yet it is one of the worst in terms of distortion of size. Africa and South America are always too small while Europe, Greenland, and North America, as well as the poles, are bloated to the point of seeming overly important because they are the big picture, the easiest to see. Still, all classrooms have this large incorrect map and that is what we are teaching. Mistakes.

This scoop is related to Unit 1: Nature and Perspectives of Geography, because of the map projections and perspectives we discussed in class.
