Holograms may adorn liquor bottles from June - The Times of India | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it
The UT excise department has zeroed in on a Nagpur-based company that will supply holograms to it.
Aspaglobal's insight:

Mandatory usage of holograms by various states excise departments in India like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry etc. on liquor has not only minimized the tragedies due to spurious liquor but have also substantially increased the excise revenue collection. As an industry association,HOMAI recommend Government to  use security hologram to check the theft and pilferage of central excise duty on various excisable tobacco products like Cigarette and Pan Masala and State Excise Department to avail the facility of hologram to stop illicit liquor trade.  A proper combination of high security hologram with enforcement methodology and track and trace systems, Authorities can increase its revenues from the sale of excisable products while shutting down illegal uses that often fund transnational criminal activities.

WIPO Launches Unique Image-Based Search for Trademarks, Other Brand Information

uThe World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has unveiled a one-of-a-kind image-search function for its Global Brand Database, adding a new feature that allows users to upload an image to search for visually similar trademark and other brand-information records from among the millions of images in the collection.

Aspaglobal's insight:

Hologram Manufacturers Association of India (HOMAI) and International Hologram Manufacturers Association, UK (IHMA) is also running a unique image based search especially for Hologram from a long time. The Hologram Image Register (HIR) is a secure registry of holographic images, established by the IHMA to safeguard hologram copyright and underpin the use of holograms in authentication and security printing. In addition to registering the holograms they produce, IHMA members search the HIR before making a new hologram to help to prevent the accidental copying of an image. The HIR is operated for the IHMA by the Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau, a division of the International Chamber of Commerce, a not-for-profit non-governmental organization accredited by the UN. For more information contact HOMAI at info@homai.org or visit http://www.ihma.org/organisation/imageiregister.

Tatas fight counterfeiting | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it

eExSo far, Tata Motors has conducted seven raids in and around Karnataka and around 125 raids across the country

Aspaglobal's insight:

Excellent initiatives by TATA. They are the most trusted brand in India and know the importance of their brand. These days brand are under attack in various forms of tampering, pilfering, duplication etc. etc. It is important that a holistic solution is developed in this fight. The solution to this ever-growing menace lies at the very core of the product i.e. a dire need to create an end-to-end holistic brand protection strategy.

This strategy can be broken into various stages a) Analysis / Changes in approach towards Brand protection
b) Make a customized & integrated solution
c) Use a secure, anti-counterfeiting device comprising overt, covert & forensic security features like security hologram seals and labels, tamper evident security films and light-sensitive ink designs. Focus on solutions, rather on feature. While there are number of technologies available in the market, focus on ethical vendor which can provide overt as well as covert technologies, as the vendor can help in designing a secure solutions.
d) Monitoring and developing an Intellectual property strategy;
e) Adopt New ISO Standards 1293 “Performance criteria for authentication tools used in anti-counterfeiting or material goods”.

Track and trace identification system for Durian | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it

PUTRAJAYA: The Agriculture and Agro-based Industries has launched a track and trace product identification system designed for the Durian market in China.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob said the Mi-Trace system would allow Chinese Durian lovers to confirm the frozen fruit they were buying was genuine and of Malaysian quality.
Via Beeyond
Aspaglobal's insight:

It's excellent. To fight this menace there is a need of an self-regulated system adopted by manufacturing companies. As most of them already following some ISO standards the adoption of ISO Standards 12931“Performance criteria for authentication solutions for anti-counterfeiting in the field of material goods” will solve this problem to a large extent." The recently published ISO Standards have will be very useful for companies to follow globally accepted standards and approach to fighting against the counterfeit.

HOMAI (Hologram Manufacturers Association of India), would encourage all manufacturers to
1. Adopt / Follow ISO Standards 12931
2. Use at-least one authentication technology which can help consumer in identification of genuine product vs. fake.

Invisible Bar Codes With Nanoparticles to Help Thwart Counterfeiting

Invisible Bar Codes With Nanoparticles to Help Thwart Counterfeiting | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it
Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have developed invisible bar codes that are nearly impossible to replicate.
Aspaglobal's insight:

Excellent!, “The menace of product counterfeiting has become very widespread and it is important to take a proactive approach to tackle this menace head-on. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has taken the lead in this direction and has recently formulated a new standard ISO 12931 titled ‘Performance Criteria for Authentication of Material Goods’. These standards lay down the guidelines for brand owners to undertake effective protection of their brands and products. Authentication solutions such as security hologram remains the foremost weapon in the armoury of brand owners, and it actually complements and easily integrates with other technologies like Track and Trace etc. Such integration provides the brand owners to select the right mix of the various technologies for adopting the optimal solution and keep the counterfeiters at bay.

of The project also aims to sell ration items to beneficiaries only on biometric authentication of one of the family members.

Aspaglobal's insight:

The Expert Committee on National Food Security Bill Resolution of the State Food Secretaries while commenting on PDS reform opined

that “comprehensive computerization of the PDS network starting from the allocation of the grain to the final delivery to the targeted beneficiary will go a long way in plugging diversion of grain, bogus
ration cards and delivery of poor quality of foodgrains to beneficiaries. Authentication & tracking technologies can play a vital role in these as currently various States in India are using practices of issuing commodities  through:

a. Bar-coded Ration card – Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, etc.
b. Smart Card based ration cards – Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, Orissa, etc.
c. Food Coupons – Bihar, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, etc.

Fake oranges seizure becomes Hong Kong's first counterfeit fruit scandal

Fake oranges seizure becomes Hong Kong's first counterfeit fruit scandal | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it

ecur5,200 oranges with suspect Sunkist labels seized in first such case in HK

Aspaglobal's insight:

This shows how a secure label (anti-counterfeiting solutions) can help enforcement people in differentiating fake product / goods with genuine. This is a good example for companies which are not using any kind of authentication /anti-counterfeiting solutions. In this case also, the genuine and counterfeit oranges look similar except for their label stickers - the real ones are made of plastic while the fakes are printed on paper, said Lam Yau-tak, commander of the Customs and Excise Department's intellectual property general investigation division. HOMAI advises all brand owners to adopt ISO standards 12931 to combat this menace. For more information, click here

Dh4.1 million fake cosmetics seized in Dubai raid | Anti-Counterfeiting Updates | Scoop.it
The products seized included shampoo bottles, soaps and skin care creams.
Aspaglobal's insight:

FMCG Products are faced major hit by counterfeiters. As a first step, every CEO or Brand owner should take the responsibility of brand attack and need to make the Brand Risk Management (BRM) as part of his business plan, review and report. The team can comprise of CEO/Brand owner, / Brand Managers/

Head of Marketing / Product development/ Sales /Logistic/
Packaging/Manufacturing, etc and or outside consultant
accountable for brand. The team can periodically review the BRM by analyzing various issues like:
i) product categories & markets
ii) buyer profi les
iii) supply chain management
and SWOT analysis of counterfeiters.

As an industry association HOMAI, strongly recommended that all brands who want to have a safety net of a global standard, should
plan to comply New ISO Standards 12931 “Performance criteria for authentication tools used in anti-counterfeiting of material goods”: The new ISO 12931 is already published. It is a very useful document for anyone who wants to follow globally accepted standards and approach to fighting against the counterfeit. http://www.slideshare.net/cjhomai/iso-12931-what-is-in-it-for-brand-owner-and-why-adopt-it
