Can Community Colleges Continue to Do More With Less?

Can Community Colleges Continue to Do More With Less? | anis | Scoop.it

"In Short

Cost-cutting policies have hurt community college student outcomes and weakened the capacity of those colleges to produce returns to students and taxpayers.

Many colleges are instituting reforms to help more students graduate with useful credentials. While these lower the cost per completion (and thus increase college efficiency), they increase expenditures per student.

The emphasis of policy and practice moving forward should be on improving efficiency: the cost per completion of a high-quality credential.

The quality of that credential can be monitored in part by tracking graduates' employment, income, and further education.

But such monitoring should not be used to rank colleges, which operate under differing local circumstances."

Social Media Is Just A Tool...and it will look very different in just a few years... That's why snatching up as many Fans or Followers as possible isn't so important b/c it won't matter when the platform decides to go IPO (and it will).

The key is to leverage business metrics to impact customer satisfaction as an internal agent of change.

We need to focus on fulfilling promises to customers and treating them like valuable assets. When we win there, everything else will fall into place whether its Facebook or Twitter or something new.

The growing role of machine intelligence will create new competition in the legal profession and reduce the incomes of many lawyers. The job category that the Bureau of Labor Statistics calls “other legal services”—which includes the use of technology to help perform legal tasks—has already been surging, over 7 percent per year from 1999 to 2010. As a consequence, the law-school crisis will deepen, forcing some schools to close and others to reduce tuitions. While lawyers and law professors may mourn the loss of more lucrative professional opportunities, consumers of modest means will enjoy access to previously cost-prohibitive services.

Let's Make Sticky Streets for People!

Let's Make Sticky Streets for People! | anis | Scoop.it

"[W]hen you see streets as people-places, those things that slow down a pedestrian’s pace may be the very things that make a street great. Things like patios, food carts or trucks combined with attractive seating, street performers, or just really lively store windows that draw a crowd, all contribute to making a street more "sticky." And by that, I don't mean gum on the sidewalk! A street is sticky if as you move along it, you're constantly enticed to slow down, stop and linger to enjoy the public life around you."

Five Ways for Colleges and Universities to Get Smart About Energy | University Business Magazine

Five Ways for Colleges and Universities to Get Smart About Energy | University Business Magazine | anis | Scoop.it

There are ultimately only two levers to reduce energy usage: capital investments (better equipment) and operating adjustments (changing how energy is used). Capital investments have proven returns but often require a capital outlay for which educational institutions can lack budget. But the good news is there are significant savings that can be recouped simply by making low- or no-cost adjustments to existing operating processes.

Here’s a look at the five most common, no-cost energy efficiency measures that can immediately help educational institutions save money and dramatically improve operational efficiency, without sacrificing occupant comfort:
