A Glimpse At Disney’s Upcoming ‘Cars’ Ride ‘Radiator Springs Racers’ | Geeks of Doom

A Glimpse At Disney’s Upcoming ‘Cars’ Ride ‘Radiator Springs Racers’ | Geeks of Doom | Animation News | Scoop.it
Disney has released a photo-realistic image of their upcoming Cars-themed ride, Radiator Springs Racers, which will open later this year at Disney's California Adventure Park in Anaheim, CA. Check out the full, larger image here below.

Radiator Springs Racers, which has the same ride system as Disney World’s Test Track, will be located in Cars Land, a 12-acre land within California Adventure Park. The ride takes up 6 acres of that space and is the largest attraction at the Disneyland Resort.

The new image will be used in the coming weeks in Disney’s advertisements or other promotional material to promote Cars Land. Check out a list of other attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas that will be part of the new land, along with a video of Radiator Springs Racers going through testing.

Since this new ride is similar to Test Track, it’s sure to be awesome. Test Track, which is located in Disney World’s EPCOT park, is one of my favorite attractions at Disney World because you feel like you’re racing down a road, but without the nausea you can sometimes get on rollercoasters. Plus, Radiator Springs Racers will be Disney-themed and based on a Disney movie about cars – perfect! I cannot wait to check this one out, and to experience the rest of Cars Land, which opens this Summer.

Create Animations Together Over The Internet

Create Animations Together Over The Internet | Animation News | Scoop.it
MotionPhone is a new app for the iPad which enables a unique form of visual communication, allowing people to create animations together over the Internet. The app, created by Scott Snibbe Studio is a similarly innovative combination of interactive visuals with music.

In MotionPhone, fingers' movements become colorful dancing abstract shapes whose personality comes directly from the way one moves. "Each person moves differently and naturally creates their own original style of animation." said Scott Snibbe, the app's creator, "Each of our movements are as original and recognizable as our face or the way we walk, and with MotionPhone, it's the first time we get to see these traces of movement."

Augmented reality makes Thundercats packaging way cooler than the toys themselves

Augmented reality makes Thundercats packaging way cooler than the toys themselves | Animation News | Scoop.it
What happens when the toy packaging becomes more exciting than the toy itself? It's an interesting experiment that's now seeing the light of day courtesy of Bandai's new Thundercats and Ben 10 toys, which come to life through a smartphone screen via Aurasma's augmented reality. The company promises that the packages help kids "examine every part of the toy before purchase." That's important. And hey, so's setting them up for a lifetime of disappointment.

Life-sized Stormtrooper cake is Star Wars-tastic… and delicious

At Sci-Fi conventions there are always plenty of Stormtroopers, but they're usually just geeks in costumes… this one is a life-sized Stormtrooper cake.

While a metal frame serves as the skeleton (and it has sculpted Rice Kripsy legs) the cake used some 208 eggs, 140lbs of sugar and 55lbs of marshmallows.

600 hungry convention-goers enjoyed tucking into the cake and each slice had three layers of cake and two layers of italian meringue buttercream… Mmm Stormtrooper.

France a moving force in animation that is not just for children

France a moving force in animation that is not just for children | Animation News | Scoop.it

In the world of animation, it tends to be Hollywood-produced projects that rule the roost. Industry juggernauts make sure their computer-animated efforts are the talk of the film industry every year and, aside from the occasional upstart (such as Britain's Aardman Animation) it remains a battle between America's Disney-Pixar and DreamWorks Animation to move the format forward...

Watch animated test footage from the 1936 John Carter that never was

Watch animated test footage from the 1936 John Carter that never was | Animation News | Scoop.it

Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first full-length cel-animated feature to appear on the big screen. But if things had gone a little differently, that honor might have gone to John Carter of Mars, which MGM was developing with legendary animator Bob Clampett. We do, however, have some remains of the failed project in the form of Clampett's test animation.

Clampett, who is known for his work on Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, as well as his television shows Time for Beany and Beany and Cecil, approached Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the John Carter stories, about doing an animated adaptation of his fantastical space tales. Burroughs was so excited about the idea of an animated John Carter that he contacted MGM, who was making a mint on Burroughs' Tarzan films, about buying a series of animated shorts. Clampett went ahead and did a test animation sequence, which both MGM and Burroughs loved.

Sadly, the film was not to be. MGM's midwestern and southern sales representatives deemed John Carter too weird for their markets. And the world didn't just lose out on a John Carter movie; if the film had proved a success, more studios might have commissioned films with Burroughs' brand of strange scifi and fantasy visuals. There's a whole alternate film history we might have experienced.

Read Jim Korkis' article about the 1936 John Carter film, as well as his piece on other John Carters that never saw the projection light of day at http://www.johncolemanburroughs.com/0934.html and http://io9.com/5874427/the-disney-john-carters-that-never-were

Macworld | iWorld goes on down to South Park, has itself a time - Mac Creative - Macworld UK | Animation News | Scoop.it
Macworld | iWorld--the annual Mac conference--has taken on more than a new name this year, as it shifts its focus to the culture that Apple's products have helped foster. Perhaps it's fitting, then, that some of the creative team behind South Park headlined the talks at Moscone Center West on Thursday.

If you're wondering what the connection to Apple is, consider this: every episode of the long-running animated series is created almost entirely on Macs.

Aardman Gets Heroic! Superman, Batman and Catwoman In Claymation!

Aardman Gets Heroic! Superman, Batman and Catwoman In Claymation! | Animation News | Scoop.it
As part of their upcoming DC Nation, The Cartoon Network has enlisted the help of the UK's Aardman Animation - the creators of Wallace And Gromit and Chicken Run - to create a series of claymation shorts based on DC Comics heroes. The idea is cribbed straight from Aardman's Oscar winning short Creature Comforts - in which interviews with random people at a zoo were used as dialogue tracks for conversations with clay zoo animals - but seeing this done in a superhero context is just brilliant. The character designs are pretty great as well.
