Concept Art for the 'Willow' Cartoon that Never Came to Be - ComicsAlliance

Concept Art for the 'Willow' Cartoon that Never Came to Be - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

George Lucas and Ron Howard's 1988 fantasy film Willow might have had a happy ending, but the followup novel, Chronicles of the Shadow Moon, outlined by Lucas and adapted by Chris Claremont, wiped out all those warm fuzzy feelings in one giant cataclysm. It didn't have to be that way, however. In fact, Willow, Elora Danan, Madmartigan and Sorsha could have had a second, much happier life in a Saturday morning cartoon. While little evidence of this failed animation project remains, some of the concept art still exists.

Collector Joe Frese recently shared this trove of concept art with io9. He purchased the pieces in a series of auctions in 2006, and while auction house Howard Lowery certified them as authentic concept pieces for a Willow TV show, Frese received no information about the animation house. He suspects that Nelvana may have been involved in the project, as they produced two other Lucas cartoons, the Star Wars-spinoffs Droids and Ewoks.

I wonder just when these pieces were created. Could a Willow show have already been in the wings when the movie was released, only to be canned when the film flopped at the box office? Or did Lucas hope to have a second go at turning Willow into a full-fledged franchise? Either way, if we'd gotten 13 episodes of Madmartigan and Sorsha raising a happy, well-adjusted Elora Danan who made it securely of her toddler years, perhaps we would have been spared some of the massacre that came with Shadow Moon. Then again, knowing Lucas, he probably would have declared the whole series non-canon and killed everyone off anyway.

Cartoon Network Reveals Dynamic New 2012-13 Slate

Cartoon Network Reveals Dynamic New 2012-13 Slate | Animation News | Scoop.it

During its New York City upfront presentation, Cartoon Network announced today several new and returning series to its programming line-up including the world premiere of DreamWorks Dragons: The Series, Annoying Orange, Ben 10: Omniverse and Beware the Batman. Held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, the presentation included live performances of classic Cartoon Network television theme songs and the creative talent behind the hit animated comedy series Adventure Time and Regular Show.

Announcements included a new sketch comedy show from entertainer Nick Cannon; the world premiere of DreamWorks Dragons: The Series, based on the critically-acclaimed feature film, How to Train Your Dragon; an original series based on Web sensation, Annoying Orange; a brand new animated series from the global franchise powerhouse, Ben 10: Omniverse; and a new CG-animated series from Warner Bros. Animation, Beware The Batman. Also, on the heels of the hugely successful Ninjago launch in 2011—which is currently the #1 show across 1st Quarter 2012 with all boys—a new partnership with LEGO for a second series was announced.

“We are executing a brand vision and content strategy that is fueling tremendous results for Cartoon Network,” said Stuart Snyder, president and chief operating officer, Turner Broadcasting’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media (AYAKM).

“Today, with a re-invented and thriving prime time, along with overall double-digit growth in total day, we are building the kind of momentum that is making this a great 20th anniversary.”

CN also announced new upcoming seasons of its original hit animated comedy series Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, MAD and The Looney Tunes Show. A second season pick-up for the live-action comedy series Level Up, which debuted as the most watched live-action series in the network’s history, and a fith season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, also was announced.

Combined with top-performing acquisitions and specials, these programming anchors fueled 2011’s prime time performance as Cartoon Network’s most-watched in five years and set the stage for a record breaking first quarter in 2012. New seasons for more than a dozen additional series also will premiere across the 2012-13 programming timeframe.

Cartoon Network also announced its ongoing commitment to its shorts program with ten original 7-minute shorts to be produced this year with a wholly dedicated production unit at Cartoon Network Studios. With production already underway on many of these projects, this continuing investment in diverse and unique talent has resulted in many of the network’s hit animated series.

NEW SERIES

Annoying Orange: Boasting more than 1 billion YouTube online views to date, Annoying Orange is the Web sensation transformed into a new television series that follows Orange and his buddies as they go on a wide range of adventures that take them from the fruit stand to parts unknown and everything in between. The television series was developed and will be produced by The Collective. Dane Boedigheimer co-created the television series with Tom Sheppard (Emmy Award-winning writer for Pinky and the Brain). Conrad Vernon (director of Madagascar 3 and Monsters vs. Aliens) will serve as executive producer for the series along with Gary Binkow and Dan Weinstein of The Collective. The series will premiere on Cartoon Network this summer.

DreamWorks Dragons: The Series: Picking up where the critically-acclaimed feature film, How to Train Your Dragon, left off, this weekly animated series follows the continuing adventures of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless on the island of Berk, along with the band of dragon trainers, all of whom now have dragons of their own! Through their training, the kids are finding out the cool things dragons can do. Not only will they learn more about their dragons, they’ll also discover new ones and battle against enemies as they explore worlds they never dreamed existed. In addition, the talented cast from the feature film—Jay Baruchel (Hiccup), America Ferrera (Astrid), Christopher Mitz-Plasse (Fishlegs) and T.J. Miller (Tuffnut)—will lend their voices to the series, which is produced by DreamWorks Animation and premieres this fall.

Ben 10: Omniverse: In the brand-new animated series, Ben 10: Omniverse, Ben will have a new character design that pays homage to his past, and he’ll have a whole new batch of aliens to battle. Beating the bad guys is just part of the superhero gig. With a little help from his new, by-the-book rookie partner, Ben explores the quirkier side of things in the alien underground and discovers enemies from his past looking for a re-match, all while a mysterious hunter is hot on his trail! With 10 new aliens at his disposal and a brand new lease on life, Ben 10 is back and more fun than ever! Matt Youngberg is supervising producer for the series, which will premiere on Cartoon Network this fall.

Beware the Batman: A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. With WBA’s Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond’s Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated’s Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island: It’s back to the island where Total Drama began with an all-new cast! Since the series’ host Chris took the show worldwide, Camp Wawanakwa has been abandoned and turned into a toxic nuclear waste dump—the perfect place for new and painful, cringe-inducing challenges! Fighting for the million dollar prize are thirteen wild new players. Total Drama: Revenge of the Island is produced by Fresh TV and will premiere on Cartoon Network this summer.

Returning series to the CN lineup include Adventure Time, Regular Show, MAD, The Amazing World of Gumball, The Looney Tunes Show, Ninjago, Level Up, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Young Justice, Johnny Test, Pokémon, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Almost Naked Animals, Casper’s Scare School, Hero 108, Scaredy Squirrel and Sidekick.

'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' to Assemble Tons of Stars in Season 2 - ComicsAlliance

'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' to Assemble Tons of Stars in Season 2 - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

As team shows go, Marvel and Disney XD's The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes already had a pretty beefy lineup in its inaugural season. If the network's latest teaser image from an unspecified episode of the show's upcoming sophomore season is anything to go off, those numbers could potentially skyrocket. In addition to a team that consisted Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Ant-Man/Giant Man, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Panther, the new promo shows off scads of heroes who will be allies -- or possibly honorary or full members -- of the team as they have in the comics over the years. But what's up with Spidey, Iron Fist and Luke Cage? Are these the heroes they're destined to become following their adventures as teens in Ultimate Spider-Man? I'm pretty sure they're just from this show's separate continuity, but we'll have to wait until the new episodes kick off on April 1 to know for certain. See a larger version of the image after the cut.

Those who took in the first season's surprise ending know that there are many reasons (well, one BIG one) to be skeptical of this season 2 image. Not everything could be as it seems. Doc Samson and Ms. Marvel, along with the Fantastic Four, who were seen in a screening of the EMH episode "Doctor Doom's Private War" at Comic-Con, all seem accounted for. Fans also got a peek at Vision and a Red Hulk (who isn't in this image) not too long ago in an EMH trailer. But Winter Soldier? That's a nice surprise. Still, I'm a little bummed D-Man isn't in this image...

See what you make of the group shot below and feel free to speculate to your heart's content in the comments.

Rare Disney drawing of Oswald on display

Rare Disney drawing of Oswald on display | Animation News | Scoop.it

LOS ANGELES - One of Walt Disney's oldest drawings is seeing the light of day after being locked away for nearly 40 years.

A rough 1928 image of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the wacky predecessor to Mickey Mouse, was brought out of the Walt Disney Co. archive this week and showcased at an event unveiling "Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two," an upcoming action-adventure game for the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that allows players to control both Mickey and Oswald.

The mischievous Oswald was co-created by Disney before Mickey, but he was lost in a 1928 contract dispute with Universal Studios. Oswald hopped back to Disney in 2006 when CEO Bob Iger brokered a deal that sent sportscaster Al Michaels to Universal-NBC. Oswald's first appearance since his return came in 2010's "Epic Mickey" as the ruler of a forgotten realm.

"We've always known about the character and loved him and wished that we could do things with him, but he wasn't a character that belonged to us," said Walt Disney Co. archive director Becky Cline. "In 2006, we were over the moon when Bob Iger made (the deal)."

Cline noted that most of the drawings from Disney's early Oswald cartoons were destroyed, likely because there was a lack of storage when his studio moved to a new facility in Burbank, Calif., in 1939. She said the image of Oswald comes from a box of drawings that was found in the 1970s and has been preserved in the Disney archives for the past 40 years.

The image, drawn on paper in graphite, comes from the 1928 animated short film "Sky Scrappers." It shows Oswald shielding himself from falling bricks with an umbrella. Warren Spector, the creative director at "Epic Mickey 2" developer Junction Point Studios in Austin, Texas, said he's aiming to include the image of Oswald somewhere within the sequel.

Rage Monkeys Rear Their Ugly Heads In Sizzle Reel For Young Justice Season 2

Rage Monkeys Rear Their Ugly Heads In Sizzle Reel For Young Justice Season 2 | Animation News | Scoop.it

There’s a lot going on in this new sizzle reel for season 2 of Warner Bros. Animation’s Young Justice, but what stood out most for me is the appearance of an Kobra-controlled “animal army” right near the beginning, led by none other than the rage monkeys from 28 Days Later. Well, they might not be exactly the same ones, but they’re definitely monkeys and they do look pretty enraged.

There’s a healthy amount of plot reveal in the preview, which debuted over at The Hollywood Reporter earlier today. It was shown at Wondercon today as part of the panel for Cartoon Network’s DC Nation animated block.

The series will continue to follow Robin, Miss Martian, Artemis, Kid Flash and Aqualad but will also feature the rest of the the Justice League, including Superman, Batman and Wonder-Woman. The Joker also pops his head round the proverbial door to tease us with his appearance in the show.

Young Justice will return to Cartoon Network next month. Here’s a three-minute taste of what you can expect to see. Click thru to watch the video

'Superman vs. The Elite' Premieres at WonderCon

'Superman vs. The Elite' Premieres at WonderCon | Animation News | Scoop.it

Attendees at this weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim will have a chance to see the world premiere screening of Superman vs. The Elite, the most-recent DC Universe original animated feature.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video, the all-new, PG-13 rated film will screen Friday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Anaheim Convention Center Ballroom.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and voice cast. Award-winning comic-book writer Joe Kelly and voice actor Robin Atkin Downes (Justice League: Doom) are among the confirmed panelists.

Kelly adapted the story from his original 2001 DC Comics story, “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?”, which appeared in Action Comics #775 and was lauded by Wizard magazine as the “Greatest Superman Story of All Time.”

In Superman vs. The Elite, Superman’s effectiveness as a superhero is questioned when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As superheroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical, yet preferably nonlethal Man of Steel.

George Newbern (Father of the Bride) reprises his Justice League animated television role as Superman, and Pauley Perrette (NCIS) provides the voice of Lois Lane. Downes steps in as Manchester Black, leader of The Elite. David Kaufman (Justice League: Doom) also reprises his Justice League TV series role as Jimmy Olsen.

The film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold). Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) is executive producer, and Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) is producer. Superman vs. The Elite is expected to be released this summer.

In addition to the screening and panel, Warner Home Video and DC Entertainment will co-present an autograph signing session with Superman vs. The Elite panelists on March 17 from 11 a.m.-noon in the DC booth at WonderCon.

Potentially Awesome New Pac-Man Cartoon Coming to Disney XD in 2013 - ComicsAlliance

Potentially Awesome New Pac-Man Cartoon Coming to Disney XD in 2013 - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

via www.comicsalliance.com - Caleb Goellner

Namco Bandai's more dormant properties are finding new life in webcomics, but for the omnipresent gaming icon Pac-Man, it's straight to TV. Sporting the working title Pac-Man -- The Adventure Begins, the new CG animated series is slated to debut on Disney XD in 2013 executive produced by Avi Arad and Rick Ungar. Unlike the 1982 Pac-Man animated series, this version doesn't appear to be a working class family man. Instead, he's a spritely young dude with colorful and similarly bulbous buds. If the trailer shown at Namco Bandai's E3 2010 party coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man is any indication (and it seems to be, judging from new show stills), Pac-Man will likely be tasked with popping power pellets like they're Miraclo in order to eat evil ghosts -- who are totally the spirits of soldiers who had previously tried to enslave his planet. That's... totally rad.

‘Tron: Uprising’: An early look at Disney’s return to the Grid

‘Tron: Uprising’: An early look at Disney’s return to the Grid | Animation News | Scoop.it
The Grid, a world of shimmering, digital wonder, was introduced to moviegoers in 1982 film “Tron” and then taken to a new visual level in “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. Now the Grid is going to television and expanding with a wider mythology and new characters — and more of the sleek, glowing vehicles that fans love.

“Tron: Uprising,” which begins this summer on Disney XD, was developed by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the same tandem that wrote “Tron: Legacy,” and they say the freedom of animation is allowing to explore the Grid without the constraints of a special effects budget.

“The fun thing about animation is all the stuff we couldn’t afford in [‘Tron: Legacy’], either because they were financially or technologically prohibitive, we can now do because it’s animated,” Kitsis said.

DC Nation Previews New 'Animal Man' and 'Super Best Friends Forever' Shorts [Video] - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

For those who weren't sufficiently impressed by the animated debuts of Super Best Friends Forever or Plastic Man because they weren't quite obscure enough, it's possible that this Saturday's DC Nation on Cartoon Network will bring a smile to your face. Not only are there new episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Young Justice, and a new SBFF short, this weekend also marks the debut of... Animal Man!

Fans of the dearly departed Brave and The Bold show will probably find the very cartoony new Animal Man shorts to their liking. Despite its wackiness, simply seeing Buddy Baker animated could even please those hoping for a Jeff Lemire-esque treatment of the character (or even a Grant Morrison-like one).

As well as Animal Man, there's also another Super Best Friends Forever short, which sees Batgirl deal with traffic on her Batscooter... which we really need to see more of, let's face it.

BJ: No, Actually we’re going to see her in a new costume that they designed.

Warner Bros. Animation Confirms CGI 'Beware the Batman' for Cartoon Network - ComicsAlliance

Warner Bros. Animation Confirms CGI 'Beware the Batman' for Cartoon Network - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

First revealed by Warner Bros. Animation Executive VP - Creative Affairs Sam Register at the MIP Junior conference in Cannes, France last year, the next DC Comics superhero to join Cartoon Network's DC Comics-based DC Nation block will be the Dark Knight in his latest incarnation, Beware the Batman. Executive produced by Register with Batman Beyond's Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated's Mitch Watson, the forthcoming animated series will be a CGI affair and feature a rogues' gallery that will surely appeal to longtime Batfans, with a press release namechecking such cult favorites as Anarky, Professor Pyg and even Magpie.

Besides the obscure villains, Beware the Batman will elevate the once unsung DC Comics heroine Katana to the status of Batman's sidekick. Originally created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo, the sword-wielding Tatsu Yamashiro has a comic book history with Batman that goes all the way back to the beloved 1980s series The Outsiders, and recently joined the Gotham-based Birds of Prey as part of DC's New 52 initiative. Katana previously appeared animated in the great Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

It was thought that Beware the Batman wouldn't debut until 2013, but SuperheroHype reports the show will hit Cartoon Network later this year. We're trying to get final confirmation on that.

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman's core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City's criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a "Batman show." Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. With WBA's Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond's Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated's Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

DC Nation Previews More 'Plastic Man' and Aardman Shorts [Video] - ComicsAlliance | Animation News | Scoop.it

Much as fans are surely enjoying new episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and awaiting the start of the second season of Young Justice in April, DC Nation's creative anthology-style animated shorts have served as the glue that holds Cartoon Network's new program block together. Two series shown the weekend of the DC Nation debut will return this week with Plastic Man: The Many and the Fowl and another installment of Aardman's stop motion DC World's Funnest. Unlike the first Plas short, the hero will face a more concrete -- or rather, granite -- foe this week. It's a face those who have seen the 2006 Puddle Trouble pilot will find familiar, to boot. World's Funnest will continue to combine children's commentary and cute clay versions of Superman, Batman, the Joker and others. Concept Art For The Happytime Murders, The Puppet Film Noir From The Hensons

Concept Art For The Happytime Murders, The Puppet Film Noir From The Hensons | Animation News | Scoop.it

Henson Studios are getting back into feature films with The Happytime Murders, a kinda sorta Roger Rabbit sounding thing in which a puppet detective investigates the brutal murders of other puppets.

Here’s the official plot blurb:

"In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous 80s television show, The Happytime Gang."

"As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. It’s up to Phil and his ex-partner, Detective Edwards, to find the culprit, but as bad blood and old resentments resurface the clues start pointing to the only viable suspect, Phil himself. Now he’s on the run with only his wits and hard headed determination, as he tries to solve, The Happytime Murders."

That comes from the website of IM Global, the film’s sales agent. They also have a couple of concept art illustrations, one of which shows Phil, the other of which might contain some minor spoilers, which I will then discuss. So, proceed at your (mild) peril.

As you can see, that last scene takes place in some kind of puppet sex shop. You can expect the film to score an R rating. Vulture once reported on some some of what goes on in this location:

One scene has a character opening the wrong door at the “Puppet Pleasureland,” and finding a cow puppet on a massage table having all of its teats milked by an octopus puppet. Reads the stage direction: “The cow MOOS in ecstasy. MILK is just SQUIRTING EVERYWHERE.”

The human woman standing on the left of the image would seem to be the character that Katherine Heigl is going to play. I assume she’s Detective Edwards.

Todd Berger wrote the screenplay, after Dee Austin Robertson, and Brian Henson is directing. Hopefully cameras will get rolling soon – I can’t wait to see what the actual puppets look like.

Miss Piggy and Kermit Ready for 'Muppet' Sequel

Miss Piggy and Kermit Ready for 'Muppet' Sequel | Animation News | Scoop.it

via www.animationmagazine.net - Ramin Zahed

It was really a no-brainer. After Disney made over $154 million at the box office worldwide, the studio would be crazy not to order a follow-up. Variety reports that the Mouse House has greenlit a sequel to The Muppets with the film’s original director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman produced the first outing.

Miss Piggy and Kermit were presenters at the recent Academy Awards, and the Bret McKenzie’s tune “Man or Muppet” won the Best Song Oscar. The two stars of thefilm had already announced the sequel while on an international tour for the first film, saying that the follow-up was officially happening during a Feb. 13 appearance on ITV’s This Morning chat show.

Jason Segel may star in the sequel, but he’s too busy with other projects to write the sequel.

Luke Cage Gets an Updated Look For 'Ultimate Spider-Man' Animated Series - ComicsAlliance | Comic book culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

Luke Cage Gets an Updated Look For 'Ultimate Spider-Man' Animated Series - ComicsAlliance | Comic book culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews | Animation News | Scoop.it

via comicsalliance.com - Caleb Goellner

Marvel's been on a roll this week unveiling official images of young S.H.I.E.L.D. trainees from Disney XD's Ultimate Spider-Man animated series debuting on April 1. Now, joining Spidey, White Tiger and Iron Fist is Luke Cage a.k.a. Power Man. No one has guaranteed he won't exclaim "Sweet Christmas!" but the show's tasteful decisions thus far seem to indicate it's not in the cards.

Luke Cage has had only a few distinct looks over the years in Marvel's comic stories, upgrading from his original disco shirt to a leather jacket with metal gauntlets and then to essentially just street clothes. Lately he's been rocking a yellow athletic tee and gauntlets with the Thunderbolts and New Avengers. Cage's Ultimate Spider-Man look has perhaps the most in common with new Power Man Victor Alvarez's outfit -- minus some chains and adding in a slight tiara motif on his shades.

Despite a slight costume similarity to Alvarez, show writer Brian Michael Bendis and Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb indicate that this version of Cage will be easily recognizable to comic fans, even if he doesn't share the same troubled past.

"I find him to be a very noble character," Bendis told Marvel.com. "That is not a word he would use to describe himself, which I think is the definition of nobility. He's the one that's the least neurotic about his heroism. [For him], that's what you do--you get super powers, and you do the right thing. There's something very cool about that. He's kind of like the rock of the team, just by the nature of him standing still, feet firmly on the ground, the others bouncing off of him. It's a nice chemistry."
