Timeglider: Web-based Timeline Software

Timeglider: Web-based Timeline Software | animating research | Scoop.it
A Web-based timeline software application for creating, collaborating on, and sharing history and project planning.

Useful for creating interactive and highly detailed timelines, largely for educational purposes. One drawback is the work is hosted on their site - there doesn't seem to be a way to keep a local copy. Another drawback is that the interface is a little clunky - it would be nice to see this at work on a tablet...

WordSift - Visualize Text

this is actually made up of a couple of distinct visualization tools: one is a word cloud that allows you to drag-and-drop words from the text to create a second, custom cloud. the other feature is a visual thesaurus, that decontextualizes words and links to related ones (even if they're not in the original text). probably some useful learning purposes, but not a particularly dynamic interface.

information aesthetics - Data Visualization & Information Design

trying to think through how to visualize keywords led me to this site, but also to thinking about WHY visualizing keywords might be important. or, to put it another way, why would one want to visualize the keywords that describe a department or faculty of researchers? i suppose one reason would be to discern overlaps between and amongst otherwise diverse, perhaps discipline-oriented, research. however, while this might be interesting, i'm not sure what would come of it -- that is, whether researchers would cross the divide and launch into new collaborative research partnerships. another, perhaps more practical reason would be to appeal to prospective students. with the diversification of fields of study and the emergence of new programs seeking to find a niche in competition with the more established graduate programs, prospective grads might not look to a nursing program, say, for a researcher widely published in biopolitics. the challenge, in this instance, is to create an aesthetic form that provides a sufficiently tantalizing attraction while simultaneously remaining functional. with thousands of possible keywords to describe research (in the social sciences alone), such an interface must remain, simply put, legible and not simply pretty.

Tagul - Gorgeous tag clouds

Tagul - Gorgeous tag clouds | animating research | Scoop.it

I don't know if I'd use the word "gorgeous" to describe a cluster of words... maybe it's just me. This is similar to Wordle, but with a slightly clunkier interface, and the advantage of linking keywords in the cloud to your site (it runs off a Flash or SVG interface). Pretty snazzy, though it tends to ignore sizing rules for the largest words.

Ryerson Slideshow Component

Ryerson Slideshow Component | animating research | Scoop.it

The slideshow component for quickly adding dynamic content to a CMS (CQ or Ryerson "institutional") homepage. This how-to page is usefully illustrated; it also links to other dynamic components (click on "Ryerson Components") and, judging by the comments section, CCS is helpful in supporting customizations to the basic look-and-feel of this feature.
