More Vets Turn to Prosthetics to Help Legless Pets
ABC News
The move is driven by persistent pet owners who embrace their animals as family and aren't deterred by the cost and commitment of outfitting disabled dogs with the devices.
Nicole Terrill's insight:

I am glad to see more options available for pets that are missing limbs. So many pets that are seen as disabled are put down and it's great to show people that these pets deserve a chance.

Nicole Terrill's insight:

This is another example of the use of social media in pet rescue. Kickstarter campaigns are becoming more and more commonplace and are a great way to fund projects that otherwise were not possible due to cost. It is also a good way for people to show their support for an idea. In this case, I am excited to see what they do with the money and how it decreases pet euthanasia in the area.

Sand Box Cat Commercial by The Shelter Pet Project

One of the most hilarious and adorable commercials are those with animals. This impressive ad, shows us why never gets old to put human voices to our pets! T...
Nicole Terrill's insight:

This is a hilarious ad that capitalizes on pet adoption with a funny twist. It is kind of interesting to imagine what a cat might this of us humans! However, the big reason why I like this commercial is that it focuses on the positives of adoption instead of trying to guilt-trip the audience into adopting. I have watched plenty of those commercials that feature a celebrity and horrifying pictures of tortured animals and it honestly makes me change the channel. I can't handle it. I feel too guilty to watch it even though I have done nothing wrong. This commercial makes me laugh and smile. It makes me feel good about adoption. This is how you connect to an audience. The fact that it is  on Youtube also makes it easily shared. I would share this with my friends!

Skunk Lovers Unite: A Look at Pets and Their People | PROOF | Helping Our Furry Friends | Scoop.it
Having photographed for National Geographic for the last 20 years, you learn never to promise someone that they will "make it" into the magazine. After seeing the story about exotic pets in the Apr...
Nicole Terrill's insight:

I am rather ignorant about the proper way to care for and obtain proper certification for exotic pets, but it was good to hear that most exotic pet owners actually discourage it. Owning an exotic pet can be very hard and difficult. The article also does a good job pointing out that these skunks were born and raised in captivity and would not be able to survive in the wild. I think this is an interesting look into the lives of these owners and their unusual pets.

Nicole Terrill's insight:

Fostering a pet is a great option for people who are unsure whether they are ready for a pet full-time. It gives the fostered pet a home with love and allows the foster pet-parents to learn about caring for a pet and how much care they take.

A year after Superstorm Sandy, numerous pets lost, abandoned remain unclaimed

A year after Superstorm Sandy, numerous pets lost, abandoned remain unclaimed | Helping Our Furry Friends | Scoop.it
Hundreds of pets lost or abandoned after Superstorm Sandy made landfall a year ago are living as strays or sitting in narrow kennels and cages at shelters across the country, waiting to be found or adopted, pet rescue volunteers say.

Via Thomas Faltin
Nicole Terrill's insight:

I think this is an excellent example of the power of social media. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Facebook page, "Hurricane Sandy Lost and Found Pets" was created to reunite owners with their lost pets. It has been a resounding success and at the time of the article's publishing the ASPCA had only one remaining pet from the aftermath of the hurricane (others had been reunited with their owners). This article also brings up how important it is to have identification tags and to microchip pets so they can be easily reunited with their owners. All of my pets are micro-chipped and although I hope it never has to be used, it definitely makes me feel more at ease knowing they can be easily identified as mine.

Nicole Terrill's insight:

I think this is amazing. The volunteers came up with an idea and ran with and it is becoming successful. Not only does it just find loving homes for pets in need, transporting them by air allows the pets to be adopted from farther away. I am planning on moving soon to a much bigger city and I really want to adopt this adorable two-year-old cat from my hometown. However, I do not think she could take the stress of such a long drive. Perhaps if this kind of service was available in my area, the option of adopting her would be more plausible.
