Barcelona (ACN).- Catalonia’s industrial sector decreased by 1.1% in 2012 due to the economic crisis.


However, exports and foreign investment mitigated the fall, according to the 2012 Annual Report on Catalonia’s Industrial Sector, presented on Thursday in Barcelona by the Catalan Government’s Deputy Minister for Business and Competitiveness, Pere Torres. Catalan companies exported products for €58.28 billion, the highest figure ever. This represented 5.7% more than in 2011 and 15.4% more than in 2008...

The government's rollout of "superfast" broadband to rural areas is about two years behind its original schedule, the National Audit Office says.

he report said only nine of 44 rural areas would reach targets for high-speed internet by 2015, and four areas could also miss a revised 2017 target.

The National Audit Office also raised concerns that BT would be the only firm likely to win contracts.

It said the company would benefit from £1.2bn of public funds as a result.

"The rural broadband project is moving forward late and without the benefit of strong competition to protect public value," said auditor general Amyas Morse...

Pay for many workers has stagnated, despite cross-party acceptance of the minimum wage, George Bain says

The UK is at risk of creating a two-tier labour market in which growing numbers of workers earn little more than the legal minimum, the founding chair of the government's Low Pay Commission has warned.

Professor Sir George Bain said that without new thinking on the minimum wage there was a risk the purpose of the commission would be perverted and it might even turn into a drag on wages.

 

Bain is returning to chair a review of how the minimum wage and the role of the commission that sets it might be strengthened. He says his expert panel, set up with the help of the respected Resolution Foundation thinktank, will consider options such as helping push up wages in certain sectors that can afford to pay more.

He said the cross-party support achieved by the commission was paradoxically one reason it needed a review...

Registered unemployment in Catalonia decreased by 3.87% in June compared to the previous month’s figures, according to data released on Tuesday by the Spanish Employment Ministry.
