Why Coins With a Black Man's Face Were Valued
The Root
The search for the meaning of these paired images ranges throughout the broadly contrasting mindsets of ancient Greece and Rome. The coin was minted during the late third century B.C.
Lily Tong's insight:

"The imagery on the coin has been interpreted as representing one of Hannibal’s war elephants on one side and its black mahout, or driver, on the other. According to this theory, the coin was minted by an as-yet-unidentified Etruscan city as a sign of goodwill toward the Carthaginians who, under General Hasdrubal, were marching to join his brother Hannibal in a combined attack on the city of Rome itself. Hasdrubal, however, was defeated by Roman legions far to the north in 207 B.C. Etruscan hopes for aid vanished with him."

This coin is extremely famous, it was minted during one of the most traumatic times in ancient Rome. Many historians have been trying to contrast whether it was between Greece or Rome mind to create this coin.

Diagnosing Mental Illness in Ancient Greece and Rome

Diagnosing Mental Illness in Ancient Greece and Rome | Ancient Greek Civilizations | Scoop.it

Gods-given hallucinations and suppressing anger for the greater good: How what's considered "abnormal" has changed.

Via Khalil Fortenberry
Lily Tong's insight:

I find it extremely interesting the various methods that were used in ancient Greece. They did not use pharmaceuticals, obviously, but they had counseling and treatment options for those who expressed mental illnesses. They documented symptoms, however they will obviously conflict, someone who is being more flamboyant in public could be considered mentally ill. Socrates was documented to hearing a voice in his head.

Khalil Fortenberry's curator insight, April 11, 2014 6:31 PM
This article was interesting because I always wondered what they thought of mental illness. I never realized that in Ancient Greece it was something considered wrong or something given to someone as a curse from the Gods When I think about how that relates to now it still is effect in a way certain illnesses do get stigmatized and mostly for the legitimacy. Which is sad because these people had real problems and back then they did not know the true nature of them to understand exactly what they were. It makes sense though from reading Agamemnon and hearing what my teacher had to say about Greek tragedies since those stories are loosely considered history no wonder people believed the gods were the cause. The reason is because they come off as very petty, quarrelsome, and almost human in the way they deal with situations just that their actions have a more dramatic or powerful effect.

Lily Tong's insight:

Writer Donald Kagan expresses how in ancient civilizations like Greece, were able to be sustainable without a formal government system. "Differences in wealth among their citizens were relatively small. There were no kings with the wealth to hire mercenary soldiers, so the citizens did their own fighting. As independent defenders of the common safety and interest, they demanded a role in the most important political decisions; in this way, for the first time, political life came to be shared by a relatively large portion of the people, and participation in political life was highly valued."

But when the mainland Greeks finally seized Crete, the Minoan civilization had already begun to crumble. Why? There are competing theories about what exactly brought down the Minoans.
Lily Tong's insight:

"Five miles inland from the coast of Crete, Knossos was the center of the Minoan civilization, a powerful Bronze Age culture that flourished between about 3000 B.C. and 1400 B.C. According to myth, the god Zeus had a son, Minos, who became king of Knossos.

Among the many legends about King Minos is that his wife gave birth to the Minotaur, a man-eating monster who was half-human, half-bull. Daedalus, an Athenian craftsman, designed a labyrinth in which to trap the Minotaur, and was later trapped there himself."

I find this to be extremely interesting! I hadn't a clue at all about how the Minotaur was "Created." I like how many of the places that are myths have been made in places that exist and have yet to be discovered.
