Big data will force a re-think, says Google cloud and big data guru | Business Cloud News

. Younger companies have been able to exploit newer BI techniques and technologies in recent years, partly because they’ve been forced into using non-traditional BI solutions due to the cost and time investment barriers of data warehousing, and partly because these companies emerged at a time when consumers were already using myriad web and mobile services as digital extensions of themselves – and that the data created as a result has tremendous value.

Microsoft Debuts Cloud-Based Power BI - InformationWeek

Microsoft takes a new stab at broad data access and self-service business intelligence through Office 365 and Excel.

Jean-Michel Franco's curator insight, February 11, 2014 2:01 AM
This is another attempt of Microsoft to transform its de facto predominance on the front end side of BI (through Excel) to enterprise BI revenue at the back end side. This may have also a strategic importance in order to make Microsoft installed base less dependant to PCs and laptop, and with this regards, the cloud is an interesting option. IMO, Power BI is very innovative with regards to cloud BI and self service BI. It is disruptive also, since it considers the cloud as the center of gravity for the information hub. As a result, external data are even easier to source that internal data ! For customers that are considering Office 365 in the cloud, power BI is worth considering, but adopting it would require an organization for BI, in order to turn personal BI into a more collaborative exercice. As an example, there are a lot a Excel sheets full of macros that are shared widely across the enterprises with poor control. it may be the right time to get rid of them, or at least reduce their development.

Big Data, Neuroscience and Dead Salmons

Big Data, Neuroscience and Dead Salmons | Analytics Zoom | Scoop.it

But with big data, you also get big challenges. This has been one of the largest issues in neuroscience. As any statistician will tell you, if you have an enormous statistical power, any test you run can easily turn out to be significant. Everything is significant in the land of Big Data!

Carla Gentry CSPO's curator insight, July 12, 2013 8:31 AM

Seems harder than you might think. When you have big data, you need to correct for multiple comparisons. The traditional method is to use Bonferroni correction. In neuroimaging we can use, e.g. Family-Wise Error correction. Find the appropriate way of minimizing the chances that your significant results could have happened by pure chance!
