What do you think of when you think of Geothermal Power?

What do you think of when you think of Geothermal Power? | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
Do you think baseload? Or do you just think of central heating? I am genuinely a fan of myths, superstitions and suppositions being debunked. In fact I think my favourite word of the French language is probably ‘désaveu’.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Coal really is on its way out, and I don't mind betting the Geysers will still be puffing away when the last great American coal railway is shut down for good and turned into an attraction. But why don’t people think of geothermal? Media, bloggers, even renewable energy advocates routinely omit the technology from discussions and news.

Nothing can replace coal for baseload power needs

Nothing can replace coal for baseload power needs | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
Coal has been the fuel of America since the industrial revolution. It's been the source of jobs, power, industry and national security for well over a hundred years.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

I am genuinely a fan of myths and suppositions being debunked and this fellow does a good job of getting inside the problems with nuclear energy. But then he says "renewable energy can never be constant enough to act as "base load" units of power", before criticizing (validly) the availability of wind and solar power. Despite the fact he just a couple of lines above typed the word "geothermal". Geothermal is a wonderful thing, Bob - ring up the Lardarello plants in Italy which next year will have been producing power for a century and a decade. The oldest coal plant in the world began producing power in 1938, 34 years after Lardarello.

You might argue that the Geysers only came on in 1960 and that he is talking about America, not the world - but if Italy can run a geothermal plant that long there is no reason the US can't. After all, it is the same technology. Other than the accessibility of geothermal resources location is irrelevant.

Coal really is on its way out, and I don't mind betting the Geysers will still be puffing away when the last great American coal railway is shut down for good and turned into an attraction.

Petitioning Ban Ki-Moon

Petitioning Ban Ki-Moon | American Geothermal | Scoop.it

Ban Ki-moon: Reduce and compensate all the UN's greenhouse gas emissions The United Nations is leading the world's efforts to combat climate change. This includes reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions wherever possible. We believe it is also the duty of the UN to compensate the remainder of its emissions by cancelling Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs) from clean energy projects. To:
Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations
Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary UNFCCC
Gareth Phillips, Chairman PD-ForumReduce greenhouse gas emissions from the activities of the United Nations System of Organisations and compensate the remainder by cancelling CERs from clean energy projects.

Dear Mr Ban Ki-moon,

Thank you for your commitment to tackle global climate change, the initiatives reported on www.greeningtheblue.org including the transparent reporting of the UN's emissions, and the hard work of your...

He's right - your income bracket doesn't affect the air you breathe, or the temperature, or the chances of your home town being flooded.

Anyway, here is a petition you can sign urging Ban Ki-Moon to "take leadership" to mitigate climate change.

Congress Calls for a Colony on Mars While Cutting Funding for Renewables : Greentech Media

Congress Calls for a Colony on Mars While Cutting Funding for Renewables : Greentech Media | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
About that plan to fix the climate…
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

A dramatic interpretation of this might be that the US Congress has given up on saving this planet and has instead hatched plans to find a new one to pollute. I would prefer to find the positives in balancing a renewable energy and sustainable development agenda for Earth, humanity's first and for the foreseeable future most important habitat, and colonising other worlds to ensure a longer-term future for our progeny.

To put spending on outer space R&D into perspective, James Cameron's movie 'Avatar' cost more to make than it cost to put that rover on Mars. With considered and restrained budgeting and high levels of interaction between scientific and political bodies, funding can be found for both climate change and extra-terrestrial colonies.

Also, Mars seems just the place to set up solar panels and Hot Dry Rock geothermal systems. The potential for renewable energy technologies on other worlds captures the imagination - and might work to further improve their popularity on this one.

BLM approves 70 MW New York Canyon project in Nevada | Think GeoEnergy - Geothermal Energy News

BLM approves 70 MW New York Canyon project in Nevada | Think GeoEnergy - Geothermal Energy News | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approves the 70 MW New York Canyon project near Lovelock, Nevada. The project is developed by TGP Dixie Development Company, a subsidiary of TerraGen Power.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

"The BLM worked closely with its partners and stakeholders to minimize environmental impacts. For example, a Bird and Bat Conservation Strategy was developed to assess the area’s avian wildlife and reduce impacts on these populations. In addition, there are no listed, proposed or candidate threatened or endangered species present in the project area."

No such thing as being too thorough when setting up a power project.

House Bill Would Cut Renewable Energy Budget

House Bill Would Cut Renewable Energy Budget | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON -- House Republicans are proposing to slash money for renewable energy research and defy the Obama administration's decision to close the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in a bare-bones annual spending bill for energy and water...
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

House Republicans would see spending for renewable projects cut in half. This is a mystifying proposal to me because American citizens, including Republicans, have overwhelmingly spoken in favour of developing more renewable energy this year (see this poll: http://bit.ly/YWv4O2). Aside from the critical importance of sustainable development to the nation's general health and economic wellbeing, the social popularity of renewable energy seems to make it one of the things that the party just shouldn't bother being adversarial over...

Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

The White House will attempt to speed up greenhouse gas emission regulations, hoping to favour renewable energies in the future as the Republican party frets over lost conventional energy electricity revenues (revenues no-one will be worrying about in decades to come when paying through the nose for coal and oil is no longer among the burdens of running a civilisation).

However, new rules to regulate hydraulic fracking could logically have some knock-on effect on Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) implementation.

No more excuses over switch to clean energy - opinion - 04 July 2013 - New Scientist | American Geothermal | Scoop.it
Despite government indifference, renewables are taking over the world.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

In inimitable New Scientist coverage style you get hit by first a depressing truth, and then a powerfully optimistic set of facts. My perspective on the scenario remains an economics-based one: as soon as renewables start making as much or more money as/ than conventional fuels, then the days of oil and coal are numbered.
