Service Without Question

Service Without Question | Awakenings: America & Beyond | Scoop.it
Here we are in the month of September anticipating the splendid changes within nature's landscapes...the season when crispness of the air infiltrates our nostrils while visions of majestic changes in color mesmerize our senses. Yet, it has not always been this way during the autumnal season. Nor is it so pleasant for all everywhere at this time. While peace exists on this earth, somewhere there is war.

Our history and ancestry are filled with times of war. Biblical war. Civil war. World war. Cold war. Unnecessary war. War is WAR! War is hell. So many lives taken. Young. Old. Age knows no boundaries when it comes to war. The visions of war are woven with bloody images and broken bone. Within battlefields reside ghosts of our ancestry.
Sharla Shults's insight:
While the American Revolutionary War created America, the Civil war of 1861-1865 determined the kind of nation America would be.

Awakenings: A Salute to Our Military Women

Awakenings: A Salute to Our Military Women | Awakenings: America & Beyond | Scoop.it
Today's History Lesson...military

While we regularly think about our men going into the military, we should never forget the role of a service person is NOT gender specific only to the male. While in today's society, both men and women serve in commissioned and non-commissioned officer status, that has not always been the case. The woman's role was mostly in the form of care and aid when needed with many entering the military as nurses.

This Day in History: July 9, 1947
Sharla Shults's insight:
On this day, to all women who serve in our military...While you salute our nation, I salute you! Thank you for your service!

Awakenings: What is your favorite cookie?

Awakenings: What is your favorite cookie? | Awakenings: America & Beyond | Scoop.it

When someone mentions cookies, more than likely first thoughts will suddenly bring forth visions of Grandma's homemade chocolate chip cookies or Girl Scout cookies. These seem to be America's favorites. When it comes to the Girl Scout cookies, is there more than simply what's in the box? Do you know what you are really buying? Of course, they are all delicious cookies, tempting us unmercifully to eat them but they represent so much more. Perhaps we should look deeper into what makes the Girl Scout cookie a 'Girl Scout' cookie. Why now? Because...

Today is...Girl Scout Day!

Sharla Shults's insight:

In honor of Girl Scout Day, take a moment to recognize and celebrate all that Girl Scouts of the USA has done for local communities across the country!

♫Eventful Music♫

♫Eventful Music♫ | Awakenings: America & Beyond | Scoop.it
There is service to country and service to others. Within the music industry are moments accountable, as well as unaccountable, but what we hold dear to our hearts are the events that make humanitarian connections. Often live performances are directed toward a specific and immediate crisis. Objectives are multi-fold: raising awareness about a specific issue, uplifting a nation after disaster, raising funds, which all fall under volunteering to a greater cause.

Today in Music History: September 22
Sharla Shults's insight:
Featuring Elvis Presley (50s), The Springfields & Herman's Hermits (60s), The Rolling Stones & Gary Numan (70s), John Waite (80s), Garth Brooks & Bryan Adams (90s) plus tidbits of music trivia for fun!

Awakenings: Countdown: 2 - 1

Awakenings: Countdown: 2 - 1 | Awakenings: America & Beyond | Scoop.it

"One day away from the 4th of July celebration! Yep! It is tomorrow! As you continue to prepare for the festivities of Independence Day, keep in mind many of our service men and women are stationed on foreign shores where celebration may not be the topic of the hour. They are the defenders of our nation ensuring that the freedom obtained centuries ago remains in tact. Remember them...never forget!

The countdown continues...

5 - In God We Trust
4 - Star-Spangled Banner
3 - Pledge of Allegiance
2 - Remember Our Troops
1 - Happy Independence Day

Remember our Troops:

 America FOUGHT/FIGHTS for her Freedom!"

Sharla Shults's insight:
Having a loved one deployed for lengthy periods of time is tough, but it's especially hard during any holiday. While you might be reveling in backyard BBQs, listening to patriotic music and of course, enjoying the grand finale, fireworks, the day may not be so entertaining for everyone. For those defending our independence, the red, white and blue they carry on this day may only be in their hearts.
