Research Proposal

Latin America is plagued with many different issues that are causing constant problems for the citizens of these third world countries. One issue that most people are familiar with is Amazonian deforestation. The impacts of this deforestation are very diverse, but the reason for the destruction of the Amazon can be linked directly to cattle ranching. The working class in Latin America, in this case Brazil is easily exploited, and for example the people who work on the cattle ranches are treated like ‘slaves’.

I chose this topic because I am very interested in how different grazing techniques in the amazon could prevent more deforestation. After working on the college farm all summer, my understanding of grazing techniques and grasses used for different weather patterns has greatly increased. Studying the different impacts of Amazonian deforestation and its link to cattle ranching will provide me with a greater understanding of the hardships that exist in Latin America.

The environmental changes due to clear-cutting such an important forest not only effect wildlife but put humans, especially Latin Americans in a pretty taxing situation. Improper grazing techniques used by ranchers diminish natural resources causing desertification and deforestation. This benefits no one and is very careless farming. Proper education in agriculture and the environment would not only benefit farmers in Brazil but could be stretched out to other Latin American countries where similar problems are arising.
