It is not unusual for dementia patients to evidence considerable negative effects from anesthesia after an operation. Caregivers often notice sharp drops in memory, postoperative delirium, and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) after an operation, and have no idea what to do about.

Laura Rogers's curator insight, April 27, 2016 7:20 AM
Being an RN can be stressful at the best of times, add to that patients suffering from Alzheimer or dementia- who during a lapse of not knowing who or where they are can provoke violent outbursts and attacks on the medical staff. I believe a better understanding and empathy towards the higher needs of these patients and training to know how to handle them when they are suffering from a lapse can not only ease the stress this can cause to both patient and staff but also give staff more confidence when dealing with all patients.

Bob DeMarco's insight:
Experimental Lu AE58054 Drug Shows Promise and is Currently Being Investigated as a Treatment for Alzheimer's

One of the biggest problems we are facing in finding an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s is the lack of participation by qualified patients in clinical trials.

It is my belief that caregivers should be investigating and participating in Phase III clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease. If we don’t participate actively it will take longer than is necessary to find a treatment for Alzheimer’s that works.
