Iron and Wine and Glen Hansard Unite for Intimate Club Gig

Iron and Wine and Glen Hansard Unite for Intimate Club Gig | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Singer-songwriters play private show in L.A. for KCRW.

They brought no plan or set lists, but modern troubadours Sam Beam (a.k.a. Iron and Wine) and Glen Hansard (the Frames, Swell Season) filled a tiny club in Los Angeles last night with songs aching, gentle and raging for a private show hosted by public radio stalwart KCRW.

The intimate two-hour set at the Sayers Club came together as a result of Beam being in town to promote Iron and Wine’s upcoming album, Ghost On Ghost, while Hansard was passing through on his way back to Dublin. They share management and a long musical friendship.

British Sea Power: Machineries of Joy – review

British Sea Power: Machineries of Joy – review | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Whether curating their own micro-festival in a North Yorkshire pub or busking atop the Great Wall of China, British Sea Power can make a claim to be one of the more intriguing British bands of the past decade. But their fifth album finds them playing it relatively straight, and it's no bad thing.

Eels LIve in Glasgow – review

Anyone who came to see Eels hoping for a heavy dose of despair might well grumble, as good vibes and light comedy reign, writes Malcolm Jack. "Did you hear that bass playing? Gimme a hug!" exclaims the group's famously forlorn fulcrum Mark "E" Everett, after Kinda Fuzzy's fevered riffing and before embracing bassist Honest Al – further emphasising the tongue-in-cheek togetherness of a five piece whose uniform black tracksuits and sunglasses give them the look of Scorsese hit-men. Later Everett reaffirms inter-band vows with guitarist Chet while drummer Knuckles hollers Wind Beneath My Wings.

Rare Smiths Demo Unearthed

Rare Smiths Demo Unearthed | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Hear early recordings that predate the band's first LP.

Here's a rarity for fans of the Smiths: former drummer Mike Joyce has tweeted a link to a very early demo tape recorded by the post-punk luminaries sometime in 1983, before they recorded their self-titled debut the following year.

Dubbed The Pablo Cuckoo Tape – according to the video's uploader, who said the recording came from an anonymous source with that nickname – the 39-minute demo is thick with fuzz, but Johnny Marr's guitar winds and worms its way into your ear, while the melodrama in Morrissey's voice remains as palpable as ever.

10 by The Black Keys (Part 1)

10 by The Black Keys (Part 1) | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Alright, you knew it would come down to this. At some point, I had to weigh in on my favorite songs by nephew Dan and his musical soulmate, Pat. A few of you might have come here expecting a highly objective and enlightened appraisal of the band’s growing catalog. But the rest of our readers know this is all about ME, the blues-snob uncle… so you can thank me in advance for living up to your low expectations.

Let’s kick this off with a bonus track, from Dan’s pre-Keys album with his band The Barnburners, featuring Kip Amore (“Johnny Belvedere”) on bass and Jason Edwards (“Del Fuego”) on drums. I sat in with this band on several occasions during their regular Thursday night gigs at Akron’s North Side Grill, circa 2000. At the time, a lot of the choice weekend gigs went to the rock ‘n soul band that kept me busy for about seven years – The Wanda Hunt Band (Dan’s first live performance was during one of our breaks). Meanwhile, The Barnburners were drawing 40-50 people on a good night, and about five friends and relatives on a lot of other nights (a typical Thursday night crowd for my current band).

Beck set to release acoustic album

Beck set to release acoustic album | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

The singer has not yet revealed a name or an official release date for the LP, but Pitchfork writes that the album came "in the form of a burst of inspiration" when he finished up last year's sheet music Song Reader release.

Beck will be playing a limited number of solo acoustic dates in North America this summer, where he will be debuting the new material, as well as some full band shows and a solo appearance on the Americanarama Festival bill in Wantagh, New York on July 27 alongside Bob Dylan and Wilco.

Speaking to NME late last year, Beck hinted that he would release two new albums in 2013.

"There is music and it's coming!" he said.

"I have this one record I started in 2008. It got put to the side for a long time but recently I've been mixing some of the songs. I'm not sure if they'll be singles or EPs or an album but it'll come out in some way and it sounds... sonically adventurous. I also have a record that I recorded last year in Nashville, which I may or may not finish."

Beck's last full studio album 'Modern Guilt' was released in 2008.

Mod: A Very British Style by Richard Weight – review

Mod: A Very British Style by Richard Weight – review | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

A study of British mod youth culture crackles with reflections on fashion, music and film, writes Ian Thomson. As West Indian migrants sought a new and better life in 1960s Britain, mods began to listen to Jamaican ska, a speedy jazz-tinged shuffle beat. Ska had originated in the early 1960s as a Jamaican twist on black American dance music ("upside-down R&B", the Jamaican reggaeguitarist Ernest Ranglin called it). Scooter-riding mods adopted the music as a supplement to their diet of imported American soul and jazz, and soon a taste of Trench Town swagger was brought to inner-city Britain, through such Jamaican groups as the Skatalites, and the Jamaican singers Derrick Morgan and the late, great Desmond Dekker.

Wilco pressing on . . .

Wilco pressing on . . . | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Jeff Tweedy doesn't mind bad reviews.

"The really negative stuff is really fun to read because people tend to be able to write better when they're being terrible," the Wilco frontman says.

But ultimately he doesn't care what others think of this music.

"It would be terrible if people convince me something I did was great, that I don't feel as great and thinking it is great would prevent me from wanting to move forward and vice versa," he muses on the phone from his home in Chicago.

Wilco were famously dumped from their label after its bosses deemed 2000 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot not "commercially viable". The band eventually streamed the album on their website and released it two years later on another label.

Stornoway: Tales from Terra Firma – review

Stornoway: Tales from Terra Firma – review | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

(4AD)
It begins jubilantly with a marriage and ends with a calm reflection on death. In between, thisrollercoaster of a second album from folk four-piece Stornoway shunts us from amorous ecstasy to heartbreak, dipping along the way to celebrate the virtues of procrastination. The album has an appealingly unkempt feel but the arrangements (by Jon Ouin) are nicely controlled and Brian Briggs's graceful, open-hearted lyrics keep sentimentality in check. It's an ambitious step forward for the band
