The FileMaker iOS App SDK made easy | Lesterius

When FileMaker, Inc. introduced the FileMaker iOS App SDK, it wanted to simplify the way FileMaker custom apps are distributed in an organization.

In the past, the FileMaker Go app along with all the FileMaker files and links were distributed separately.

Thanks to the FileMaker iOS App SDK, you only need to distribute a single app containing the complete FileMaker solution.

Because using the FileMaker iOS App SDK requires a good knowledge of command line instructions and Xcode, this can be problematic for many people.

Thanks to myFMbutler Mobile App Builder, the whole app building process has now been simplified. You can now build apps without ever opening Xcode.

Mobile App Builder allows you to create and manage FileMaker mobile custom apps with the iOS App SDK, without any programming knowledge, through its easy-to-use interface.

Gathering Data for FileMaker Charting, Part 1

Gathering Data for FileMaker Charting, Part 1 | All things Filemaker Go | Scoop.it
Every day it seems, on the FileMaker Community, someone asks about how to work with FileMaker Charting.

This question usually comes when I’m walking a dog, so I have to stand there on the corner and try to answer on my phone while my pup does his thing.

Setting up a chart using the chart object can be quite confounding until the day it isn’t. And once it is easy to understand you’ll never forget how to use it. It’s like riding a bike or something else that you never forget. While this might not be a ‘boss-level’ technique, it is still worth getting to know.

So we are going to focus our attention on the chart object so that you can create a chart in relatively short amount of time.

HealthKit for FileMaker on iOS

HealthKit for FileMaker on iOS | All things Filemaker Go | Scoop.it

For the next version of MBS FileMaker Plugin for the FileMaker iOS SDK, we are adding HealthKit functions.

For some time now we had people asking for it, so now we start with adding some basic HealthKit support:

- Checking for availability of health data.
- Authentication to get permission to use it.
- Query basic values like sex, blood type, birth date, skin type and wheelchair use.
- Query sample data like step counts and return results as JSON block.

A FileMaker Developer Can Learn Javascript | All things Filemaker Go | Scoop.it
You, Ms. / Mr. FileMaker developer can be a JavaScript developer as well.

You can learn JavaScript and use it in your daily work.

FileMaker folks are suited for JavaScript. Though we may have stumbled into the FileMaker platform, we have enough knowledge and conceptual understanding to program also in JavaScript. There are many reasons why we can learn and why we should learn JavaScript. Let’s examine them.

FileMaker Themes & Layout Templates | YouTube (27'45")

Selecting a FileMaker theme is a pretty easy task.

But, what do you do when the default FileMaker themes don't provide exactly what you want?

When you create your own Custom FileMaker theme, you spend a lot of time accounting for all the possible options you can apply to each styled object.

In this video you'll find information about how to get up and running quickly with a pre-made starter theme which you can add to your own FileMaker solution.

We also cover the process of adding a layout template which showcases all of the various styled objects so that your theme management is yet that much easier.

Gathering Data for FileMaker Charting, Part 2

Gathering Data for FileMaker Charting, Part 2 | All things Filemaker Go | Scoop.it
We are taking a look at the FileMaker charting object, specifically how to collect the data for a chart.

We started the discussion in the previous post.

I’ll repeat what I said there:

FileMaker chart objects will render a returned-delimited list of data in a visual way.

That’s all you need to know.

If you can pass a list to the x-axis and a matching one to the y-axis (as applicable), then you can display data on a chart.

It is really that simple.

How To Use Material Design Icons in FileMaker Pro

How To Use Material Design Icons in FileMaker Pro | All things Filemaker Go | Scoop.it

It amazes me how easily we adapt and respond to visuals. Not only is functionality important to software development, but design is also pretty important.

Because time is a limited commodity, usability and intuition are important factors when encouraging users to adopt a new system. And generally, the visual elements of the system determine how quickly users are able to learn a new application.

Design includes many different aspects – color, layout, fonts, sizes, etc.

You have to be strategic with your design elements, including those micro-images we call icons.

Those seemingly small symbols ultimately make a big impact on user navigability and comprehension.

Who else but Google has created a style guide for all of their applications and shared it on the interwebs for everyone to use. Material Design is basically a design language that Google created to unify digital interfaces and experiences.

They offer lots of good UI/UX design ideas in this document and a bunch of free resources.

Who doesn’t like free stuff?

One of those free things is a whole set of icons, nice ones.

You can browse through them here: https://material.io/icons/.

Let me show you how to use the icons in FileMaker Pro.

From the Material Design site, you can download the icon in a variety of formats.

The best format for FileMaker Pro is SVG, of course.

One of my colleagues, through some research, trial and error figured out the best way to import these icons into FileMaker Pro.
