Coaching Questions: Ask What, Not Why | Box of Crayons

Coaching Questions: Ask What, Not Why | Box of Crayons | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
You can’t get answers if you don’t ask questions. And, more importantly, you can’t get the right answers if you don’t ask the right questions.

Mastering the art of asking a powerful question is the key to freeing up your time and empowering your team. The more questions you ask, the less advice you give, and the more your employees learn and develop.

For Better Conversations, Replace 'How Are You?' With This One Phrase

For Better Conversations, Replace 'How Are You?' With This One Phrase | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
If you want to connect with people, you have to let them know you're listening. Here's how.
Ariana Amorim's insight:
Whitmore recommends going beyond the simple "How are you?" to ask open-ended questions that warrant more than a one-word response. The phrase she likes most: "Tell me." (Some examples: "Tell me about your weekend" or "Tell me, how did the two of you meet?")."Anytime you start a sentence with 'tell me,' it launches into scintillating conversation"

7 Ways to Ask Questions like a Coach

7 Ways to Ask Questions like a Coach | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Leaders should be more coach-like. I’m probably not the first person who has penned those words in a blog post. My guess is that you’ve heard that advice before—possibly even tried being more coach-like with your team members and direct reports but ultimately realized that it takes a lot of time to do well.

Okay, so what do I ask to build rapport and trust? The short answer is to be human! Find out what’s important to them and what their interests are. Start by getting to know them and then revisit asking about the things they care about in future one on one meetings.
Andrea Ross's curator insight, September 29, 5:51 AM

I'm a big fan of one-on-ones as it allows some quality time with your staff both professionally and personally. It gives you the opportunity to bounce ideas and continue to build rapport & trust.  If as a manager you feel you just can't squeeze that in then it's probably time to re-look at your diary as this needs to be a top priority. If you don't they'll find someone else that will. Happy Friday all.

How do You Improve Workplace Communication? Ask Questions | Box of Crayons

How do You Improve Workplace Communication? Ask Questions | Box of Crayons | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Sometimes the best way to have a constructive conversation is to give a little less advice and ask a few more questions. When you shift from giving advice and offering solutions to asking questions, you might at first feel a little anxious. You might wonder, "How can I be helping if I'm just pestering with questions?" But if you think about it, asking questions can be a great way to practice mindful communication. To be mindful of communication essentially means to listen and think before speaking, to be mindful of what you say, to communicate with kindness and awareness. You can see how asking questions, in the right way, is a form of mindful communication—you need to stop and listen to the answers rather than jumping in to express your own thoughts. Your asking the right questions enables you and your teammates to come up with a successful game plan in a much more efficient way than if you had merely leapt in with your own solutions. How do Questions Improve Communication at Work?

The neuroscience of asking insightful questions

The neuroscience of asking insightful questions | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
I teach coaching skills to leaders. When I get to the section on how to ask questions (an important part of learning to coach) I might ask a trick question to start off: “How many of you are good at solving problems?”. Without fail, almost all hands shoot enthusiastically into the air. There’s nothing wrong …

Chris Carter's curator insight, March 23, 8:12 PM
We are not guiding if we are solving for the kids. We need to guide kids to their own solutions to the challenges that they face. Asking questions rather than giving answers tests our patience and our desire to "help," but we do not help if we simply give answers.
Marshall Alston's curator insight, March 27, 1:35 PM
Depending on what you are trying to learn will depend on how you ask a question.
