A Short Definition of 'Values' and 'Value Congruence'

A Short Definition of 'Values' and 'Value Congruence' | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Simply put, a value is about what a person wants to be doing with his or her life. Values are chosen consequences that can never be fulfilled. Rather, they serve as motivation for certain behavioral directions.
Whereas goals can be achieved, values cannot be achieved. For example, a value of being creative can never be fulfilled. Even if the person creates a painting (a concrete goal), it would be silly to say, “Now that I have created this painting, I’ve accomplished creativity. Now I’ll proceed with the next thing.”

Therefore, values are best formulated as verbs, in that they are not something that is ever fully achieved.

Lolly Daskal: Leave Your Values At The Door

Lolly Daskal: Leave Your Values At The Door | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Your values determine what is important and meaningful to you. They align with your purpose, and speak loudly and passionately to others -- and to yourself -- about who you are and what you're called to do in this world.
Ariana Amorim's insight:

"We live our best lives at the intersection of our values and our purpose. If we leave them out, we leave out the best parts of ourselves."

"We need values-based leaders at every level, and values-based organizations in every field. My message to you is this: Never, never, never leave your values at the door."

Feel Good About Your Life and Be Happy

Feel Good About Your Life and Be Happy | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Important actions determine the quality of your life. The virtues and values that you decide to embrace and live by allow you to feel good and be happy.
Ariana Amorim's insight:

From the article:

"The wonderful thing about being a human being is that you are free to shape and sculpt your own character.  You can make new choices and decisions at any time of life, especially with regard to your values, and begin acting as if you had those values already.

Perhaps the measure essence of happiness is your ability to achieve the three common goals of self-respect, self-esteem and personal pride that everyone wants.  It is only when you have these three in sufficient quantities that you feel really good about yourself."

Value-Sort Activity | The Good Project

Value-Sort Activity | The Good Project | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Knowing what we value most in our work, relationships, and other commitments makes it easier to respond to opportunities and conflicts with integrity. The Value Sort is an excellent way to reflect upon what is most important to you personally and it is also a great way to stimulate conversations with peers, colleagues and family members.

Sort the following list of 30 Value Cards in terms of their relative importance to you. Place each in one of the 5 columns. The order of the Values within each column does not matter, only the columns ranked from Least Important to Most Important. When you are done with the activity, print a record for yourself and then see how other visitors to the site have sorted these same values. It may be interesting to also have others (students, colleagues, friends) complete the sort and compare trends across different groups.

5 Pitfalls to Avoid When Identifying Team Values - Jesse Lyn Stoner

5 Pitfalls to Avoid When Identifying Team Values - Jesse Lyn Stoner | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
What Happened: Someone on the leadership team suggested it would be a good idea to identify our values. The regular agenda for the leadership team meetings was already jam-packed, and no one had time for an extra meeting to do this work, so the task was assigned to a few volunteers to bring back to the team. The Pitfall: Seeing values as separate from the real work. The leaders delegated and disengaged. By taking the time as a team to discuss what values they believed were critical to their future, they would have discovered how these values drive the very behaviors they need to accomplish the work. The sub-group members understood it was not a good . . . → Read More: 5 Pitfalls to Avoid When Identifying Team Values

LynBoyer.net | Values Statements are More than Words on a Wall | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

"Publicly stating core values and beliefs requires courage because that declaration creates an expectation of specific behavior. Following through with that behavior over time requires commitment. However, if groups or individuals do not examine their values and work to achieve alignment, agreement and acceptance, they have no clear direction. A values statement is a means to that end."

"Developing a values statement is relatively easy; living those values is not."
