The Charleston Gazette | When less is more: Even as wages rise, earning power drops

Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This a credible website because it gives facts about minimum wage. For example, it says when it was created and when the inflation rates come the rate isn't very high anymore. That fact can be used in my introduction paragraph. It also says prices in other necessities will increase it will tell who is average and who's not. This can help me if I want to use facts in any part of my essay.

Bill to raise Oregon minimum wage has Democratic support

Bill to raise Oregon minimum wage has Democratic support | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
The campaign to raise Oregon's minimum wage to $15 an hour is backed by 11 lawmakers.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This article is about the rise of Oregon's minimum wage which got the sponsorship of the Democratic party. This also says that businesses with less than 10 employees wages will be $12.50 by 2016 and $15 by 2017. They believe after raising the wage people will be able to stop depending on the public and do things on their own. This can help me because one of my reasons it that there is no way someone can make a living off of a 7 or 8 dollar salary. This can also help because it has not only good information but it has some counterexamples I can use also. This is another news article.

Nationwide wave of minimum wage increase proposals coming to Va.

Nationwide wave of minimum wage increase proposals coming to Va. | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
A nation that turned redder last month also gave strong endorsements to boosting state minimum wage levels, and now a Northern Virginia Democrat says that if even rock-solid Republican states like Alaska, Arkansas and Nebraska are taking the plunge, Virginia should, too.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This article is all about the political stand point. This can help me with my essay because if you're a democrat you'll most likely side with them on raising it but if you're a republican you'll mostly agree that we should keep it the same. It also says that even the strongest republican states are agreeing to raise it. This is one of my 5 news articles. Also I can use this when I'm talking the politic sides and which one approves the raising of the wage.

Minimum Wage Workers Keep Up The Fight For $15-An-Hour

Minimum Wage Workers Keep Up The Fight For $15-An-Hour | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
Fast food and home healthcare workers were rallying in the River North neighborhood early Thursday, hoping to keep the pressure on state lawmakers to raise the minimum wage.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

Although the city council in Chicago approved that the minimum wage is going to be $13 by 2019. Two days later workers are still going to be fighting for a higher wage. This contributes with my other news article so I can use this when talking about how low it is. Plus I can use this is show that people aren't happy that they need to wait 4 years for an increase on their wages. This is a credible site because I got it from CBS of Chicago.

Click here to edit the title

Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This is a news article about how Chicago hiked to get an increase on their minimum wage. By 2019 Chicago's minimum wage is going to $13 an hour. I can use this to prove that the the minimum wage is so low that most of the workers are hiking. It says that this will lift 70,000 people out of poverty. This is a credible site because I got it off of middletown libguides. This is one out of the five news articles.

Florida's minimum wage will rise to $8.05 on Jan. 1

Florida's minimum wage will rise to $8.05 on Jan. 1 | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
Florida workers who earn the minimum wage will get a 12-cent bump in their pay on Jan. 1.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This is a useful news article because in January the minimum wage in Florida will increase. Plus this new rise to $8.05 is almost one dollar more than the federal wage of $7.25. Also a business owner in Fort Lauderdale says that he "pays more than minimum wage to start anyway, we want our employees to be taken care of," which I can use when I'm talking about when rising the wage can help people have an income. This can useful when I need a quote because in the second to last paragraph it a statistic. This is one of the 5 articles I'm using for the paper.

Where Were You When The Minimum Wage Was Raised?

As the Congress decides whether to raise the minimum wage, this animation shows how many times it has been raised and by which presidents.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This is a video about how much the minimum wage was in the past years. This also has past events through the years. It also shows the presidents which helped increase the minimum wage. This can help me in my essay because underneath the video it's a little more information and it says something that I can use. For example it says "raising minimum wage could help those attain an income." This is my second video.

What To Do About The Minimum Wage

What To Do About The Minimum Wage | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
Raising the minimum wage is often framed as a classic business-versus-workers issue. But even strictly from the workers' point of view, there is a delicate balance to be maintained. Raising the minimum wage can make it easier for workers to make ends meet, but raising it too much can cost [...]
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This is a very useful article because it shows both sides of the argument. On the second page it shows how much the minimum wage should really be because if it gets too high it can cost some of these strikers their jobs. Some people are saying that the government shouldn't even interfere with the wage limited since it's a free market. This article can help me see which side to choose. This is a credible site because it's a non-biased opinion.

Should We Raise the Minimum Wage? - YouTube

In which John discusses the minimum wage, and whether raising the minimum wage would negatively affect employment in the United States. Thanks to Rosianna fo...
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This is my first video and it shows another side to the minimum wage argument. There's one line that I find very interesting he said "higher minimum wage stops economic growth, plus unemployment will go up." I enjoyed this statement because it showed the other side of things. In the news now it's saying stuff like higher wage will get the country out of poverty, which may be true for the people who still have a job after the fact. I can use this video as a counterexample in my argument. This video also says something very important it says, "When the wage for the employees gets higher so do the food prices." This is one of my two videos.

Philadelphia push to raise minimum wage part of national debate

Philadelphia push to raise minimum wage part of national debate | Alicia Marcotte- Minimum Wage | Scoop.it
Last month, a dozen workers walked through Philadelphia International Airport just before 5 a.m., wondering whether they still had jobs. The repercussions of their walkout the day before - a protest over pay and conditions - would be seen when they tried to clock in.
Alicia Marcotte's insight:

This article is about how cities and counties want to increase the minimum wage in their state. This is one of my 5 news articles. It also says that two dozen cities and counties have instituted a minimum wage of $15 which will be phased by 2021. This is a good and useful source because it shows that many people do not agree with the states minimum wage. Also many people can not live off of the minimum wage these days. This is a news article.
