Women's Suffrage Vocabulary

1.) Muckracker- The action of searching out and publicizing scandalous information about famous people in an underhand way.

Sentence- That journalist is a muckracker!

2.) Suffragist- A person advocating the extension of suffrage, esp. to women.

Sentence- These policies gained her the support of socialists, trade unionists, and women suffragist.

3.) Picket- A person or group of people standing outside a place of work or other venue, protesting about something or trying to persuade others not to enter during a strike.

Sentence- Thousands of people turned up to picket.

4.) Quaker- The doctrine of the "Inner Light," or sense of Christ's direct working in the soul.

Sentence- I'm from a family of Quakers.

5.) Amendment- A change or addition to a legal or statutory document.

Sentence- The government signed the amendment.

6.) Enshrine- Preserve (a right, tradition, or idea) in a form that ensures it will be protected and respected.

Sentence- The right of all workers to strike was enshrined in the new constitution.

7.) Encompassed- Surround and have or hold within.

Sentence- No studies encompass all aspects of medical care.

8.) Enfranchisement- Give the right to vote to.

Sentence- A proposal that foreigners should be enfranchised for local elections.

9.) Entitled- Give (someone) a legal right or a just claim to receive or do something.

Sentence- The landlord is entitled to require references.

10.) Militant- Combative and aggresive in support of a political or social cause, and typically favoring extreme, violent, or confrontational methods.

Sentence- A militant nationalist.

This is an important picture in the fact that it gives visual evidence about what women actually had to go through to prove they mattered.
