Among the participants and authors some are featured as well-known figures as Presidents Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as George Dewey. The Rough Rider as the regiment soon known, comprised 1,250 men including Indians, cowboys, and eastern college athletes. US troops were welcomed in early 1898, and the Puerto Ricans greatest hopes were for increased rights ad a better economy. Finally, the Spanish-American was had its origins in rebellion against Spanish rule that had began in Cuba in 1895. The Treaty of Paris concluded the Spanish-American war, but commissioners from the US were it was sent to Paris on October 1, 1898 to produce a treaty that would bring an end to the war with spain after just six months of hostility.
