EHP – Flavoring Chemicals in E-Cigarettes: Diacetyl, 2,3-Pentanedione, and Acetoin in a Sample of 51 Products, Including Fruit-, Candy-, and Cocktail-Flavored E-Cigarettes

Background: There are over 7,000 e-cigarette flavors currently marketed. Flavoring chemicals gained notoriety in the early 2000’s when inhalation exposure of the flavoring chemical diacetyl was found to be associated with a disease that became known as “Popcorn Lung.” There has been limited research on flavoring chemicals in e-cigarettes.

Objective: To determine if the flavoring chemical diacetyl, and two other high-priority flavoring chemicals 2,3-pentanedione, and acetoin, are present in a convenience sample of flavored e-cigarettes.

Methods: We selected 51 types of flavored e-cigarettes sold by leading e-cigarette brands and flavors we deemed were appealing to youth. E-cigarette contents were fully discharged and the air stream was captured and analyzed for total mass of diacetyl, 2,3-pentanedione, and acetoin, according to OSHA Method 1012.

Results: At least one flavoring chemical was detected in 47 of 51 unique flavors tested. Diacetyl was detected above the laboratory limit of detection 39 of the 51 flavors tested, ranging from < limit of qualification (LOQ) to 239 μg/e-cigarette. 2,3-pentanedione and acetoin were detected in 23 and 46 of the 51 flavors tested at concentrations up to 64 and 529 μg/e-cigarette, respectively.

Conclusion: Due to the associations between diacetyl, bronchiolitis obliterans and other severe respiratory diseases observed in workers, urgent action is recommended to further evaluate this potentially widespread exposure via flavored e-cigarettes.

How much alcohol is safe? It varies from one person to the next-- Harvard Health Publications - Harvard Health Publications | Alcohol Misuse - Smoke | Scoop.it
Many studies link light to moderate drinking (up to two standard alcoholic drinks per day for a man) to better health, but the science remains uncertain. Older men might consider limiting themselves to one drink per day.

Juliet Stanton's curator insight, November 18, 2014 9:52 PM

This article reflects the topics we have been talking about because it says that drinking is a different issue for everyone. Some people are able to have much more alcohol than others before becoming drunk because they have different ages, gender, body types and other characteristics. It means that when people offer you unidentified drinks, you don't know firstly what is in them, but you also don't know how it will affect you specifically. That is why it is so important to not accept things you don't know the contents of.

#FASD - BREAKING THE SILENCE: NATIONAL FASD DAY, 9th September 2014

We are calling this year's campaign, "Breaking the Silence, Let's Talk About FASD".   FASD is often referred to as an "invisible disability" and those affected suffer in silence.   This year, 9th September, is a great opportunity to break that silence, get people talking about FASD and raise funds for the work of The FASD Trust, so it can continue to support all those affected by FASD.

Promoting Alcohol Abstinence Among Pregnant Women

Promoting Alcohol Abstinence Among Pregnant Women | Alcohol Misuse - Smoke | Scoop.it
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is one of the most preventable sources of developmental abnormalities, and has a singular cause-alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Estimates for the costs of treatment of a single case of FASD range often above one million dollars. The primary strategy for prevention currently centers on no alcohol consumption during pregnancy. However, a sizeable number of North American women currently drink during pregnancy. A literature review examined the behavior of maternal alcohol consumption in order to understand the rationale associated with drinking. Generally, it appears that pregnant women differ by their alcohol consumption habits and their reasons to drink. In an attempt to eliminate FASD, we review a number of educational, legal, and community-based programs that have been used to promote abstinence and examine where they have been successful. Unfortunately, social marketing strategies have received less attention. Several potential applications of social marketing directed to drinking-during-pregnancy campaigns are suggested, and possible contributions to the overall effort are explained.

A review of policies on alcohol use during pregnancy in Australia and other English-speaking countries, 2006 | Medical Journal of Australia

A review of policies on alcohol use during pregnancy in Australia and other English-speaking countries, 2006 | Medical Journal of Australia | Alcohol Misuse - Smoke | Scoop.it
Abstract
  • It is well accepted that heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a risk factor for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, but research findings for exposure to low to moderate alcohol levels during pregnancy are equivocal, allowing a range of interpretations.

  • The 2001 guideline from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for low-risk drinking for “women who are pregnant or might soon become pregnant” recommends fewer than seven standard drinks per week, and no more than two standard drinks on any one day. This position has polarised health professional and consumer opinion in Australia.

“L'alcol fa guadagnare, e se qualcuno muore era messo in conto"

“L'alcol fa guadagnare, e se qualcuno muore era messo in conto" | Alcohol Misuse - Smoke | Scoop.it

Evaluation of the impact of the image used in a communication campaign to raise awareness about the effects of alcohol use during pregnancy. Bazzo S., Battistella G., Riscica P., Moino G., Marini F...

Baumberg , 2006; WHO, 2011).
pericolosi dell’ esposizione prenatale all'alcol (Ott et al , 2004; Pool , 2008).

'Drink responsibly' messages in alcohol ads promote products, not public health

'Drink responsibly' messages in alcohol ads promote products, not public health | Alcohol Misuse - Smoke | Scoop.it
Alcohol industry magazine ads reminding consumers to “drink responsibly” or “enjoy in moderation” fail to convey basic public health information, according to a new study. Federal regulations do not require "responsibility" statements in alcohol advertising, and while the alcohol industry's voluntary codes for marketing and promotion emphasize responsibility, they provide no definition for "responsible drinking."

Messages that increase women’s intentions to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy: results from quantitative testing of advertising concepts

Public awareness-raising campaigns targeting alcohol use during pregnancy are an important part of preventing prenatal alcohol exposure and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Despite this, there is little evidence on what specific elements contribute to campaign message effectiveness. This research evaluated three different advertising concepts addressing alcohol and pregnancy: a threat appeal, a positive appeal promoting a self-efficacy message, and a concept that combined the two appeals. The primary aim was to determine the effectiveness of these concepts in increasing women’s intentions to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy.

A Web-Based Intervention to Reduce Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancies in the Community

Despite warnings that drinking during pregnancy is unsafe, many women are still at risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP). This article describes the outcomes of a web-based, self-guided change intervention designed to lower the risk for AEPs in a community. A sample of 458 women, between the ages of 18 and 44 years and at risk for an AEP (i.e., any drinking in the past 30 days and not using reliable contraception), participated in the study. A total of 58% of the women enrolled in the self-guided change intervention were no longer at risk for an AEP at the 4-month follow-up. Sublevel analysis revealed that mail and online versions of the intervention were equally successful at reducing risk for an AEP. This study represents a successful implementation of a web-based, self-guided change intervention to reduce risk for an AEP, an intervention with community-wide reach due to the Internet platform.
