ReGenUC's insight:

We don't usually curate this sort of 'court reportage' article but, it appears to have sparked some interest from Channel 9 in our Drug Drive program (http://www.regen.org.au/drinkdrugdrive), perhaps because it happened not that far from our main site.

Queensland Government says reduced trading hours don’t stop alcohol related violence

THE State Government has highlighted an overnight assault at Southbank as evidence reduced trading hours for licensed venues would make no difference to alcohol related violence.
ReGenUC's insight:

We'd suggest one incident does not a refutation of the impact of restricted trading hours on alcohol-related violence make.

Some particularly odd logic from the Member for Brisbane: “Alcohol was involved, the gentlemen were intoxicated but ultimately violence was the cause of last night’s incident.”

Surely, violence is the result, not the cause?

DRUG users would be prevented from repeatedly choosing counselling to avoid court, under a three-strikes policy foreshadowed by the Liberals in State Parliament.
ReGenUC's insight:

Good grief. More of the usual 'tough on crime' tripe: pandering to community stereotypes with policy proposals that would only make things worse.  Diversion programs have been shown to be effective, but they seem to be a popular target for political outrage in SA.
