I will never forget those eyes, those black sinister pin pricks that silently screamed "I have no soul", as they took me in.
ReGenUC's insight:

What the heck is going on at Fairfax? From a publisher that can usually be relied to to provide more considered coverage of AOD issues, in the past few days we have seen sports writer Michael Gleeson seeking to define a former footballer purely in terms of his ongoing battle with drug dependence (http://sco.lt/7Kfqfx) and now this atrocity from columnist Wendy Squires.  The opening line gives a pretty good (or in this case, bad) example of what follows: a systematic attempt to dehumanise an entire group of people (who use methamphetamine), based an experience with one of them, or two, if you account for her previous experience, about which she has written in less egregious terms. This is the most shockingly stigmatising piece we have seen in a long time. It's worse than the sort of uninformed rubbish you'd expect from radio/tv shock jocks or their compatriots in print. Yes, there are very real harms associated with the use of methamphetamine. Yes, violence and psychosis are genuine issues amongst those who are using at a dependent level. But this is far from representing the broad spectrum of experience of people who use this and other drugs and it does not detract from the basic humanity of those who are experiencing acute methamphetamine related harm.
