A major fundraiser has been launched to help support the roll out of pill testing programs at more Australian music festivals, after Groovin The Moo hosted a successful Aussie-first trial in April.

On Friday the 27th of July, the ABC published a story titled: “Thousands of Australians turning up to work on methamphetamines”. The ABC cited a report authored by “forensic toxicologist Andrew Leibie that claimed 5, 000 South Australians working in safety sensitive industries were: “either under the influence of ice or suffering its hangover effects”.

American cities are increasingly considering measures to address the extraordinary costs of the current opioid crisis in the US that go beyond what is to be found in the traditional drug policy toolbox. Plans to allow safe injection facilities in some cities are likely to be the starting point for more drug policy innovation at the local level. While the current American opioid crisis is unique in many ways it might be worth drawing on some of the overlooked lessons and policy innovations that were used to tackle Switzerland’s 1990s heroin epidemic.

Doctors confronted with information about patient deaths by opioid overdose became more careful in prescribing the painkillers once they learned the risks first-hand. A new USC study published in Science shows many clinicians do not know about patient overdose deaths once they leave their care. Overcoming the disconnect by sharing news of losing a patient makes the opioid crisis more personal and leads doctors to reduce prescriptions.
