The Future of Work is Human + Machine

The Future of Work is Human + Machine | Eye on Alberta #Tech | Scoop.it

The debate surrounding today’s smart machines often reminds me of the legend of John Henry, which dates from the dawn of the Second Industrial Revolution. You may remember John Henry as the “steel-driving man” who went head-to-head against a steam-powered hammer to prove that a man could outperform a machine. He won the contest, but his heart burst in the effort and John Henry died.

In the modern version of that American folktale, machines are coming to take away our jobs again. This time, it is robotics, artificial intelligence, and other digital technologies that will supposedly transform our companies into employee-less buildings filled with automatons. However, as I read through our research at Bersin and the thought leadership being produced throughout Deloitte, I’m seeing a very different story.

For instance, when our Deloitte colleagues analyzed the impact of automation and robotics in the UK from 2001 to 2015, they discovered that more than 800,000 jobs had been lost, but nearly 3.5 million new jobs had been created. Moreover, on average, those new jobs paid nearly £10,000 more annually than the lost jobs.

Canada’s innovation agenda: There’s such a thing as too much consultation

Canada’s innovation agenda: There’s such a thing as too much consultation | Eye on Alberta #Tech | Scoop.it
We are failing at commercialization of ideas across the board in all industries, and in all sizes and ages of companies
Organic Social Media's insight:

Here is Canada’s problem: We are failing at commercialization of ideas across the board in all industries, and in all sizes and ages of companies. Only 2.2 per cent of our firms even engage with innovation, and business R&D spending has been systemically declining for 15 years. If there is a global gold medal in innovation failure, then sure, Canada “owns the podium.”

Revolution AI: How Edmonton is gaining ground as a research and innovation hub for AI

Revolution AI: How Edmonton is gaining ground as a research and innovation hub for AI | Eye on Alberta #Tech | Scoop.it

Cam Linke, co-founder of Startup Edmonton, says the city is starting to see more startups take advantage of this newfound interest in AI. “When we started, you couldn’t get attention unless you were talking about pulling fermented dinosaurs out of the ground. Now it’s great to see attention is on more sectors than oil.

Organic Social Media's insight:

Startups are working with AI in two ways, Cam Linke explains. “They either have it as a core part of what they are doing; or they are amplifying what is being done already using machine learning to target the right people and product offerings.”

Edmonton is a perfect venue for this, Linke says. “We have a large number of industries — oil and gas, finance, healthcare — with big problems to solve and the data and ability to use it. A lot of startups are being created because they can now combine AI techniques with these industry ties to create a company. Within that mix are the researchers at the university.”
